In canonistic commentaries (as in many other genres!), it's common to use the names of popes as stand-ins for the collections they issued, or for councils over which they presided. So for instance, decrees of the 1274 Second Council of Lyon are regularly referred to as constitutions of Gregory X. What's the easiest way to maintain a distinction between references to popes (or others) qua people, versus references in which their names are merely stand-ins for texts that might ordinarily go by another name?
