Question about marking unclear words #60

Closed jeffreycwitt closed 7 years ago

This question was asked by Dan via email and I'm transferring it here:

I have some uncertainty about to mark words which I'm not sure of yet...for now I've been giving them an element of <unclear></unclear>, or have marked them with a "?," or both.

Do you have any suggestions for how I should proceed in these situations? I should note that I plan to come back to these places later, once I've become more familiar with the hand and the abbreviations.

In my view, your current practice seems fine.

We use as a generic tag for anything that is unclear for any reason.

Here are our basic guidelines for the use of the element:

https://github.com/lombardpress/lombardpress-schema/blob/develop/docs/1.0/diplomatic/index.md#unclear-and-illegible-readings

In your case, when you're are still learning the hand it might be excessive to mark everything as when a simple question mark will alert you to the need to revisit the word.

When you approach a final draft, unclear should be used to mark things that remain unclear (for various reasons) despite your best and final effort.
