Cutlist 4.1.6 will not run at all after downloading #12

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 8 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. In SketchUp 2013, open project file
2. Click on Plugins tab
3. Click on Cut List
4. Click on "run" button - nothing happens
5. Click on "close" button - nothing happens
6. Click on "save settings" button - nothing happens
7. Click on "help" button -- nothing happens

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

See above. Program appears inert -- I can click on check-boxes and make changes
in settings but these are not saved. Clicking on the ? buttons in the main page
produces nothing.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

I've run into this with 4.1.4 and 4.1.5 as well. I run SU on Windows.

Please provide any additional information below.

I forgot to mention that I have administrator credentials as I am the sole user
of this computer. Gary Devine

Hi Gary,
Is your Internet Explorer up to date? It must be min IE8.
I certainly don't get this result - so we'll have to sort out your situation.

Thanks...Steve

Hi, Steve,

Well, I used Firefox 21 for the 4.1.6 download yesterday. This morning, I
deleted that download from the SU program file, then downloaded 4.1.6 again
using IE 10. Same result as before. I neglected to mention that my UAC
asked me whether I wanted to allow CutList to make changes to my computer,
so I believe the UAC isn't the issue.

Thanks for your help. I really like the cut5list concept!

Cheers.... Gary

Hi Gary,

It wasn't so much what you used to download the plugin with, but what is
running on your computer. Whether or not you use IE as your default browser,
Sketchup uses IE when it running a Ruby plugin. I have no control over it.

But, since you said you downloaded it using IE10, that tells me that you have
IE10 on your computer already - so that's good - and it's not that - at least
it doesn't point to it obviously.

Can you confirm the following
1) You removed all previous files before installing the latest version. ie: you
deleted cutlist.rb as well as the cutlist folder? from the plugins directory.
2)You installed using the Sketchup plugin installer?

If yes to all of the above, then perhaps you can try something for me, which
will give me a hint of what is going on:
1. Open ruby console ( window->ruby console )
2. Run plugin as before -> get the error
3. Copy any output to the ruby console window into a text file and attach it
here for me to look at.

We'll get this! but it still seems like an installation problem of some sort.
These sort of things happen on occasion but it's always due to something else
other than the plugin.

Thanks,
Steve

Hi Steve. This morning I deleted all instances of cutlist, then re-loaded 4.1.6
with my Norton firewall completely disabled. I then installed it using SU2013's
preferences/extensions dialog box. I then opened a SU2013 project, opened the
ruby console, then selected cutlist from the plugins menu. I then hit all the
buttons, one at a time, at the bottom. While the buttons display as being
"pushed" when I click on them, the ruby console exhibited no activity at all,
as the accompanying screenshot shows.

Help???

Hi Gary,

Ok thanks! I can't say for sure what it is but you've eliminated the
installation and it is looking more and more like an IE issue.
In your attachment, the display is not quite correct. Board and Sheet options
should show up as tabs in the configuration screen.
This tells me that the "tabber.js" is not running properly.
Furthermore, with absolutely no output in the ruby console when you press the
run button, this tells me that the html-->Sketchup interface is not running but
since the IE script running is suspect, it seems more likely that than the
sketchup interface somehow being broken. In other words the IE browser seems to
be preventing some things from running.
I'm actually running bog-standard IE9 ( since it is not my default browser, I
merely update whenever I am forced to but other than for sketchup never fire up
IE). Windows8 runs IE10 by default and I've not heard any complaints specific
to Windows 8/IE10.

My guess is that there is some security setting being set in IE preventing the
scripts from running properly or something running on your computer which
intervenes in html scripts being run by the plugin. You mentioned Norton. Could
your firewall be preventing some things from running in your browser? Or other
virus software installed be intervening in the browser?

One of the usual suspects that I've seen in the past is that ActiveX is
disabled on some browsers as a matter of security. This prevents scripts from
running in the browser which modifies itself (this is a known entry point for
viruses so is sometimes blocked).

One thing you might try is to reset the setting in IE. Fire up IE10, click on
the gear(at least this is what it is in EI9) and select 'internet options',
then go to the advanced tab and there should be a settings reset button near
the bottom. Click it and follow instructions ( I think it only takes effect
after you shut down and then restart IE). Then start sketchup and try again to
see if there is a difference.

Hope something helps here, else I'll look for some other ideas.

Steve

This issue seems to crop up every now and then and I admit that I still do not
quite understand it, but I am reasonably certain that it is not the plugin as
most people do not experience this issue - but it may be the way the plugin
runs with IE (on Windows). I still this this is a security setting within IE
preventing the html from running the plugin.

I am closing this issue as I believe there is nothing to fix on the plugin.
In the meantime, there are upgraded versions to use - there was an issue with
SU8/2013 which has been fixed since then, which may have produced similar
results.
If there are any more question, please open another issue.

thanks...Steve
