I believe it is capitalized like "Newtonian" physics. That said, I know of no other word to describe. Cartesian coordinate system, which is a very concrete, common thing.

Sadly that may disqualify it because it's derived from a proper noun, and hasn't trickled down and been upgraded to a plain-old-word... http://www.anagrammer.com/scrabble/cartesian
