While any .bib file should work, for json/yaml it specifically needs to be generated by BBT, as the CSL-JSON generated by Zotero itself does not contain citation keys.

The blog post linked to specifically instructs users to set up a biblatex export BTW.

Yes, better, thank you - I need to update quite a lot of stuff on the blog post. Really it makes sense to move those instructions into a GitHub wiki or similar.
