This is the current leaf number curve: If I define leaf appearance as 0 after 300 days after emergence, the LAI is reduced as in the observed data: However, it does not reflect the actual leaf appearance in the crop:
Apparently there are two picks for leaf size increase due to the release of water stress: If we remove the increase on leaf area we get:
This still capture the reduction of storage root weight for some varieties:
The individual leaf size is:
The main issues is the total leaf area by cohort when the plant has branched:
Although at the end of the growing season the individual leaf is less than 100 cm2 (AREA2), the number of apices are 25 (# apices) producing an area by cohort of more than 2000 cm2 (AREAT):

Reducing the individual leaf size after 900 GDD:
Reduces the leaf area by cohort but still not enough to avoid the increase on leaf area:
This is mainly for branching varieties and I assume it the the result of overestimating the number of apices in the plant.
