Oh, I just discovered it also messes things up with forks. I can't fork your repo if I already have a fork of bos/configurator.
Note that it's possible to un-fork a repository; as per https://help.github.com/en/articles/why-are-my-contributions-not-showing-up-on-my-profile#commit-was-made-in-a-fork github support seems to generally handle such requests quickly and smoothly.
This repo already has existing tags corresponding to configurator versions. I was trying to see if you have any outstanding changes in git that you haven't released to hackage, but this prevented me from doing that. This project is different enough that I don't think you need to preserve the git history. Giving attribution in the cabal file and documentation is enough.
