Considering multiple application versions with regex in paths

For Illustrator we have for every Illustrator version a new Preferences folder with version number. Do we have a possiblity of defining a generic string maybe with the use of regex or similar? Otherwise we need to add Lots of paths, each time a new Illustrator version is being released.
