Graph lines don't display in IE8 with XHTML DOCTYPE #398

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Create an html file using XHTML DOCTYPE
2. Use Timeplot example JS and HTML code
3. View in IE8

What is the expected output?

The graph

What do you see instead?

A functional graph - sized, plotted, and has callouts - but no graph lines or 
dots.

What version of the product are you using? On what browser and what
operating system?

API 1.1, Windows 7 IE8
