I did some testing in a separate repository: https://github.com/lspitzner/travis-test. That approach is not very well documented in the travis docs, but works very well. Much easier to maintain the CI scripts, and might reduce CI times a bit.
I'm sure that you're still working on this, but in the meantime I've moved over to GitHub Actions: #323 (and #331).
