Can we keep track of how many hits (or who is using) the shiny and downloading data.

Julien told me that NCEAS has used Google Analytics for this in the past. It's probably best if you guys create the Google Analytics account, so you have total access to it.

I can get to work on the actual implementation, but I would need someone to do the first 2 steps of this tutorial: http://shiny.rstudio.com/articles/google-analytics.html, and then send over the code snippet that you get.

Created branch tracking to set this up with some dummy javascript code.

I think I have it set up so that once we have a Google Analytics account, I can just copy/paste the code snippet into the right spot to get tracking to work

View count and download button tracking is now live!

A couple notes in case we want to track more things/edit what we already have tracked:

• google now has 2 implementations for adding javascript for web tracking (called analytics.js and gtag.js). I'm using analytics.js (mostly just because that's what I wrote the dummy code in :))
  • if for any reason we wanted to migrate over to gtag.js, we would have to change the code snippet at the top, and change ga to gtag with slightly different syntax. see here: https://developers.google.com/analytics/devguides/collection/gtagjs/migration
• I was having a hard time tracking the download button for a while. The trick is that shiny's implementation of downloadButton isn't really a button! It's a link. So I just had to go into the downloadButton function and add an argument for onclick = ga(...) to get it to track.
