Since there is not only the addresses.map config file used on the Geofabrik server but also the addresses.local.map config file for testing, using softlinks should not be necessary anymore.
I initially introduced softlinks to handle the situation that there were different paths used on the Geofabrik server and my local installation. But I guess, going without them (but with two separate config files) is easier overall.
