This PR adds a more GitHub friendly README to the repository.

I notice that the README in the branch doesn't render correctly on the GitHub website, but it looks fine in the GitHub README preview tool, which uses the GH API.

I like the idea of an extended README, but I must admit to not being a fan of markdown. It makes reading things on a terminal really annoying (as this example shows). I know this makes me an old fart, but can we have the extended README but in plain text format?

OK, I think the latest commit to this branch should be better, but I haven't removed all the formatting. See what you think...

Does more need to be done to this before it can be merged?
