Add an option the formatter entry table that allows to use \renewcommand or \providecommand instead of \newcommand.
Both these two may be valid approaches to defining macros.
(Additionally it might make sense to let the command be specified with \newcommand* (I didn't do this since the defined macros may or may not be compatible with this).
