Try restart Safari while connected to the Internet. That usually helps!

I'm afraid that was the first thing I tried. No success.

The important part here is to have internet connection while restarting the
browser. Extension loads possible pairs once, on start. You have that message
if it does not succeed. I can't see any other explanation why that could fail
for 'fr-en' pair.
Could you try Franker extension for Chrome? Does it work for you?

I get the same error message with Chrome.
Have tried again quitting, and restarting with internet connection, restarting
computer etc.

Okay, I see something actually changed with Microsoft Translator service. No
quick workaround, unfortunately :(
I'm working on the new version of the extension.
Thank you very much for the bug report and stay tuned!

strange - it started working again yesterday for no obvious reason. But now I
have a message asking me to set up payment with Google or Microsoft translate.
