upon moving a block that is directly infront of the optical source (or moving a block to be directly infront) with a piston and possibly other methods while the source is emitting a beam causes the game to crash
after a little bit more testing it actually seems to be when a change to the active beam occurs when an indicator that is not in digital mode is involved with the beam in some way
