setup — clean out codebase #19

All of the cleanup work Nick is doing (feel free to list here).

I just finished cleaning out all of the example code with commit d9db775df665bb8376de43793db3e25e124ef0a4. There's plenty more to do including removing dependencies to other git repos, moving GRT to a sub-module, etc.
