I'm definitely cargo culting here, but after a day of trying to understand what exactly streams are like, I'm putting this up for help and to return once I do some reading/testing.

You got the main outline right but the details are missing. Let me build a working version and I’ll come back.

(I looked inside the node-zlib code like you suggested, but turns out it's in C.)

I have opened #5 for this, since too litlle of the original code survives.
