simply umaximizes/remaximizes the windows

This works well (with Atom among others).

A minor inconvenience is that if you have "undecorate half-maximized windows" enabled, then half-maximized windows will become fully maximized upon a gnome-shell restart.

Apologies as I've disappeared over during the summer. This seems to work surprisingly well on my set up, which is just as well as the root issue seems like a fairly deep rabbit hole.
