The massless equation (without the electromagnetic gauge field) seems to have been proposed first by N. D. Sen Gupta in 1967 in a paper entitled "The Wave Equation For Zero Rest-Mass Particles." Since then, many have discussed this equation. Recently, Valeriy V. Dvoeglazov discussed this equation in AACA and cites a range of literature on the equation.

Gupta identified the momentum term of $p_0$ with an additional mass term. Interestingly, Gupta suggests the even and odd fields can be coupled via a duality gauge field. Thus far, I have seen no identification of the zitter behavior. A thorough review of this literature will be worthwhile.

There may be disagreement with regard to the symmetries of this pair of equations. I thought that charge and time reversal symmetries would be violated, but recently reversed that opinion. The argument for this violation is in the git history.
