This all looks great to me! Thank you so much for this contribution Ryan 🙇 I have been meaning to implement some rules using CSS variables like this for a while now but struggled to find the time, so this has been a great help and an inspiration.

Unless you see a reason not to merge this then I'll hit the big green button?

I think I touched on everything I meant to, so if the test suite passes, merge whenever.
