PRS650 / PRS+ 2.1.01alpha

Current problem after updating to PRS + 2.1.01alpha:

After the battery full early in the morning has been charged, I read on the way to work around for an hour.
Then I turn off the PRS650.
On the way home if I want to read again, I will "battery low" message.

If I do not read after charging, the battery lasts only about two days (without use!).
With version 2.0.18 stable + PRS650 held the battery at the very same approach in each case for several days.

Could you provide a bit more details please.
Which format are your books? (LRF, TXT, EPUB etc)
Which settings have you changed?
Do you use custom fonts?

Same for me, after updating and uninstalling the PRS + 2.1.01alpha. My reader
keeps behaving weird, despite of installing release 2.0.18 again. Battery is
getting low rapidly, the reader occasionally restarts or is switched off. I
removed PRS+ with the uninstaller and reinstalled 2.0.18 but the settings were
still there. How can I the settings remove completetly?

To clear all PRS+ settings, download this file:
http://code.google.com/p/prs-plus/downloads/detail?name=prsp.sh

Put it in /database/system/PRSPlus/ and then restart the reader.

Don't forget to remove the file afterwards, or the settings will be wiped each
time the reader is started.

PRS650 / PRS+ 2.1.01alpha
I installed the latest (2.1.01) Alpha version and occasionally I noticed that
the battery would drain down to one bar overnight. Reverting back to the 2.0.18
version is fine.
I have about 1380 books on the device all epub format and a couple of PDF's.
All on the main memory of the device - it has no cards.
I had set the Auto Shutdown Time to 3hr otherwise my settings were as 2.0.18.
My usage was no different between the two versions.
I did notice that on the times when I had the battery drain issue the device
didn't shut down - with the Auto Shutdown Time.
Thanx
Nath

I have the opposite experience. With the older versions my battery would
regularly drain a couple of bars overnight (on sleep). With 2.1.01 I have not
experienced any battery drain problems at all. Battery life has moved from
about 4-5 days to 4 weeks.

I have approximately 150 books on default memory, mostly epub.

I am experiencing the same issue with the most recent alpha version.

For your information: I could fix it in my case and it had nothing to do with
left settings. It was the power switch which was loose. I opened the housing
and pressed with the screwdriver on the switch. So the switch feels now more
tight and the battery problem has gone.

Still having this problem here @ PRS650 / PRS+ 2.1.01 alpha.

I thought the problem was gone since it didn't show the last couple of weeks.
But one evening I read a book, 4 bars charged. Next day it was empty ("low
battery" message) without using it between.

Shutting down the reader and rebooting did not fix it for me this time (though
it did when it first occurred).

Very strange.. are there any debug files or something like that I could provide
for you?

hi, I have the same problem with prs-350. Yesterday, the battery was fully
charged, I left the reader in standby mode and this morning it's appeared the
low battery message.
I have 32 books on default memory, all of them are epub, the same epubs were
present with the previous version.

Hi, an update from my comment earlier. I mentioned that 2.1.01 fixed the issue,
however my PRS-950 has started draining the battery again on this firmware.
Sometimes it drains the whole battery overnight while on sleep.

Just drained the battery again over night... sometimes while reading (starting
with full battery) I can also see the battery draining empty abaut one part of
the bar in 30 minutes.

Any chance of a fix soon? Else I will have to wipe and try an older version
again, losing quite some cool features :-(

Original comment by eiko.wag...@gmail.com on 8 Jul 2012 at 10:23

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
The is no chance of a fix soon, because we do not know what is causing the
battery-drain!

If users who have battery-drain problem can tell us which PRS+
settings/features you have enabled, we might be able to work out what the
underlying problem is. Otherwise it is just guess-work.

Original comment by ben.chen...@gmail.com on 8 Jul 2012 at 12:21

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
Allright. I will do a fresh install of the newest beta and see if the problem
exists with default settings. If not, I will start enabling my settings again,
category by category.

The only problem will be that the battery draining only happens "sometimes" :-/

Is there any possibility to see the battery percentage instead of just four
bars? Could help to see when it's draining while reading.

Original comment by eiko.wag...@gmail.com on 8 Jul 2012 at 4:14

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
Apparently, the hardware does not return more specific values concerning the
battery charge so we can't create a percentage.

Also, unless you delete your PRS+ settings manually first, then when you
reinstall PRS+ you will still have your previous settings. (I think kartu was
intending to put up instructions on how to manually delete PRS+ settings.)

I did the following:
- Hard reset the PRS-650 (Reset button, Power on, Left and (+) key while
booting, confirm with OPTIONS key).
- Choose all the default settings (language, dictionarys etc.)
- (as stated above) Download
http://code.google.com/p/prs-plus/downloads/detail?name=prsp.sh
- Put it in /database/system/PRSPlus/
- Restart the reader
- Remove the file again.

Seems to me that all settings are cleared now. Anything else needed to really
"clean" the device?

Else I will start testing by putting some EPUB books on it and start reading :-)

Original comment by eiko.wag...@gmail.com on 8 Jul 2012 at 4:58

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
There is nothing else you need to do to clear settings, not that I know of
anyway.

One other possibility is that certain EPUB files cause the battery drain (at
least, that is one of the current guesses!) So it might be a bother, but only
loading one EPUB at a time may help...

2.1.01 alpha on a PRS 950
I notice that this often (but not always) happens when reading epubs created
using http://dotepub.com/
It doesn't go into standby mode (though it sometimes does), which I have set to
fifteen minutes... and I sometimes come back a day or so later to find out that
it shut itself down because of a drained battery, or that the battery is
significantly depleted and that it hasn't gone into any power saving mode like
it is supposed to, there is no standby screen, I can flip pages immediately.

Settings that I (mostly) know that I changed:
- Book history: 20 books
- Book Management -> Customize Home Menu Booklist -> Book Selection: Last
Opened Books
- Show Reading Progress -> Format for Current Book: "Page 5 of 100 (5%)"
- Book Viewer -> No Flash when Closing Overlays: ON [another one of those
settings that would be better phrased "Flash when Closing Overlays: Off"]
- Book Viewer -> User EPUB Style (CSS File) - FontsAsInLRF.css
- Key Bindings -> Volume Buttons -> Holding Volume - -> When Reading Book:
Rotate 180° [does not work properly on my machine, as I have previously
discussed]
- Key Bindings... Holding Volume + -> When Reading Book: Rotate Clock Wise
[also does not work properly on my device]
- Key Bindings... Holding Home Button -> Global: Book History
- Menu Customizer -> Slot 3: PRS+ Settings; Slot 4: Periodicals

For Standby, specifically (though I don't remember changing anything as such):
Standby Image Type: System Standby Function [which is, from Sony fw settings,
"Picture On, Message Off"]
No Icon, no Custom Standby Text, no Events Overlay.

Shutdown Image: Current Book Cover, no icons, text or overlays.
Scaling: keep aspect ratio
Dither: yes
USB Transfer Mode Dialog: Yes
Auto Standby Time: 15 minutes
Auto Shutdown Time: 48 hours

Status Bar Settings: Clock -> Clock Style: 24 hours, Always Shown
Page Index: Index Style in Books: "5 of 100 (5%)" (Always Shown), "5/100"
(Always Shown)

News from me as well: Battery drained again over night.

Settings: All default. Just changed the dictionary to English-German and back
to English-English.

I only have 5 books (all EPUB) on the device (internal, no SD card inserted)
since the last reset and read only ~100 pages of one of it since then.

I don't want to upload the file here for legal reasons, but could send it to a
developer it you think it would help.

Are your sure this is a problem caused by the prs + firmware?
In other sony reader forums you can find many other users that haven't the prs
plus enhancements installed that are seeking help for the same defect.
Could it be that its a defect of the reader hardware? some suspected a defect
of the on/off -switch to cause the quick discharge.

I'm suffering this problem on my 650 with prs+ during last year. Installing
2.0.18 removes this battery draining issue completely, so I don't think it is a
hw problem. But current version has so many interesting things...

I recently discover that, with current PRS+ version, if I switch to Home screen
just before suspending the reader (instead of suspending it from "inside the
current book") the problem almost disappears, or disappears completely -perhaps
I sparsely forget returning to home screen before suspension...

Thanks, Jose. I, too, have experienced the battery drain (using a custom build
based on the latest changes to the repository). But I have never experienced
it since I followed your comment and always switch to the Home screen before
putting the reader into standby.

Fellow developers: is there perhaps some PRS+ function involving a timer that
is somehow remaining active when the reader goes into standby if the reader was
displaying a book but not when the reader is on the home page?

Thank you for the tip!
I had the drain bug too since the last build and tried many things without any
differences.
It drained the battery...sometimes slowly, sometimes in matter of hours.
I only have the impression (maybe it's false) that the drain-bug is more
present when you are about to finish a book. At the beggining it's nearly not
visible and at the end I had to shut down the Reader to avoid complete draining.

So Thanks again Jose!

Sadly, I'm not so sure that following the tip (returning to Home before
suspending) completely removes the battery draining issue. But it is a matter
of fact that I have only suffered the bug twice in last 3 months, and before
following the tip I usually suffered it once or twice every week.

I thought I should chime in on this problem.

Stock experiences the battery drain bug too. I experience it every few weeks
or so. I have never updated or put PRS+ on my device. I only just started
looking into this when I noticed people having issues.

Unfortunately I don't have much else to add, all .epub on internal memory,
PRS-650. I don't know my habits that cause the drain, as it only happens
occasionally for me.

So it might be the same problem as stock, or something with PRS+ too. But it
seems like it might not be PRS+ at all, but a bug in the stock firmware.

@ TheClarkster,
thanks for your contribution. (You should consider installing PRS+, as
uninstall is easy - and you will get some nice features)

@All: as further workaround - as changing to the home-screen befor standby is
suggested - there is a new alteration in PRS+ which will preserve the former
Page_Style (e.g. margin_remove) for the current book.

Complete battery drain overnight on my 650. Settings still in default except
for adding fonts. I only have 3 books loaded all epubs.

Will try homing before stopping for the night.

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
Yesterday my battery drained for 3 bars in 6 hours. The reader had been
suspended from Home, so now I'm sure "homing before suspending" doesn't avoid
completely the bug. When I turned it on again, just after the drain, it was at
the Home screen, and touching the "Continue reading" section didn't do nothing.
I had to select another section of the home screen to continue. I have notice
similar behavior after other drains (e.g. returning from suspension and have
"Continue reading" section "black-reversed" as if it was selected") .

Perhaps the bug is somewhat related to "touch detection" software, as if the
reader remains "locked" detecting a touch and that thing is what drains the
battery...

Original comment by jose.cen...@gmail.com on 20 Oct 2012 at 9:53

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
After selecting a specific standby time I have not experienced another battery
drain.
I have drained it again leaving the timer in "default." That's twice in less
than a week. The device didn't go to home screen so naturally the battery
drained due to touch screen active.

Original comment by goingtot...@hotmail.com on 20 Oct 2012 at 7:39

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
That makes a lot of sense actually, it could be the touch sensor. Could be
some grit or something in the way of the sensor (we know how sensitive it is)
and that's preventing it from sleeping.

If the sleep timer at default will keep it awake if there is a touch sensed,
that would do it. Again, it could be a few issues here we are dealing with,
the touch sensor might not be the only problem.

I'll try setting the standby time and see what happens, but it happens so
rarely for me I won't be sure it works for quite some time.

@Mark.Nord: I did install PRS+, it was easy, and I love it. :)

but i did remove it to the old version 2.0
