Not sure if I missed it , but is there an overview available that explains how the images \ clips are obtained? I recall seeing somewhere login provides a token.

No, this project only contains documentation for usage. The implementation is very straightforward, if you want API information you have to review bling-viewer project. Inside the interactors files there are all the REST API calls.
