I made a couple of attempts to find Linux drivers for this chip. Both failed!!!!! As these are the only possible drivers that my friend at Realtek could find in their repo, I am afraid that we need to conclude that there is NO LINUX driver for this chip that is available.
I purchased one of the "Free Driver" RTL8188GU chips that mounts as a USB-CD device, and can be switched to a wifi device. The only driver on the CD device is for Windows 10, thus we cannot even use ndiswrapper.
For the moment, the only way to use the RTL8188GU with Linux is in a VM guest running on a Windows 10 host.
Larry, if I have a driver for Windows XP, could an ndiswrapper based solution work?
It might. Not all Windows XP drivers were written to the standard - those generally failed. Send me the XP driver to Larry.Finger@lwfinger.net and I will give it a try.
I've sent the mail with a onedrive link. Please let me know, if you have issues retrieving it. Thank you for your efforts!
I retrieved it OK and it installed OK on a Windows XP virtual machine,. Unfortunately, when I loaded it with ndiswrapper, I get missing globals: ndiswrapper (import:232): unknown symbol: ntoskrnl.exe:'wcsstr' ndiswrapper (import:232): unknown symbol: ntoskrnl.exe:'ZwEnumerateValueKey' ndiswrapper (load_sys_files:200): couldn't prepare driver 'netrtl8188gu_xp'
The first one will be easy, but the second deals with the registry. It may be possible to provide a dummy and be OK. I will need to do some research.
Larry, I've opened a feature request at ndiswrapper's SF page: https://sourceforge.net/p/ndiswrapper/feature-requests/38/
我也遇到8188gu型号驱动问题,自己找资料整理了安装指南.我在Raspberry pi 和 ubuntu 20.0.4都安装成功了。deepin也应该可以。解决了您的问题帮忙点个星星

I also encountered a problem with the 8188gu model driver. I found the information and organized the installation guide. I successfully installed it on both Raspberry pi and ubuntu 20.0.4. Deepin should work too. Solved your problem, please give me a star
This repo works for me. https://github.com/McMCCRU/rtl8188gu
@sivadasrajan You can also try this one if you want better upload speed: https://github.com/lwfinger/rtl8xxxu/
It's available in the kernel since version 6.4.

Thank you so much. I'll try this
Hello,
I've recently bought a Tenda W311MI USB dongle, which is based on the lsusb output:
Bus 001 Device 011: ID 0bda:b711 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. 802.11n WLAN Adapter
After some googling it turned out that this is the 8188GU chipset, thus I've compiled the rt8188gu driver first from the master and then from the rtl8188gu branch. The compilation and installation went fine in both cases, but after restart the driver could not talk to the dongle.
OS and kernel: Operating System: Ubuntu 19.10 Kernel: Linux 5.3.0-55-generic
I'm providing the dmesg output of both driver variants, maybe that could help a potential investigation.
I'm happy to test any changes you would make to the code, if you see any value in it.
