timeseries output #7

it would be very useful to start again from fresh every N seconds, and output 
to a different file.

That would allow timeseries analysis of long running processes.

A more basic yet very useful feature is to be able to externaly (re)start/stop 
the sampling. @Jeremy, how would you recommend this to be implemented?
