In my opinion Vertical Tabs is one of the best tab managers I have ever used (and I have tested many). To me it has only one flaw, which is by design- since the extension is shown in the side bar, it cannot be used on system tabs (New Tab, Bookmarks, Downloads, History, etc) plus it cannot be used on Chrome Web Store. This limitation could be overcome if there is an option to open Vertical Tabs not in side bar but in pop-up, which will make the extension accessible virtually everywhere. If the developer thinks that such an option would be against the principal design of the extension, another solution might be that he releases a new extension with the same features but this new extension would open in pop-up, not in side bar. For me the perfect solution would be an option to open the extension in pop-up.
