How to use Numix icons with Thunderbird default theme? #1

Hi @m-e-h

Thanks a lot for your Numix theme!

I love the Numix design, particularly the icons, and would like to use them together with the Thunderbird Default theme.

Currently my default themes seems to use some Numix icons, e.g the reload button, but by far not all of them.

Do you have any ideas how to tell the default theme to completely use Numix icons?

Thanks for your advice!

Hi @orschiro

I haven't actually used Thunderbird or this theme in a while. I just now bumped the version so it's installable on the newer versions of Thunderbird, though I haven't tested it.

To make it installable you can follow these instructions https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Building_a_Theme#Package Basically, you download or clone this repo and zip up everything thats inside the theme folder. You then change the file extension from .zip to .xpi. Then from Thunderbird's addons screen "install from file".

Hope this helps. Again, I haven't tested this in a while but it covered most icons last time I used it. I have some Numix compatible icons I made for Inkscape, Filezilla and Evolution as well. I'll try to upload those sometime for others that are as anal about icons as me.

Oh.. I see now that you were asking about using the default theme with Numix icons. I wish I knew the answer to that. I spent a lot of time searching the system folders and never did find where Thunderbird's default icons are located. That's actually why I threw this theme together.

Please let me know if find a way.

Thanks for your reply.

Indeed I am only concerned about the change of the icon theme for the default theme.

I will keep you informed once I have found a way to do this!

I found an answer.

if you want to use icons that are not in the default theme, you do want to use another theme. Icons are Thunderbird icons. What your desktop Linux theme is is totally irrelevant to the process as Thunderbird uses the icons packaged in the theme.

My question to you:

Can we make two different themes?

  1. A custom Numix theme using Numix icons
  2. A clone of the default TB theme using Numix icons

Let me know what you think about this and how I can contribute to the second!
