Change magenta fill color during init/exit of EOF #96

Something changed the EOF window to flood with a magenta color at startup
and shutdown of the program.  This is a minor gripe, but I think it was
less jarring to have it use a gray color.

I accidentally made the default video mode 8-bit when changing the 
configuration 
routines. This has been fixed.
