determine var type of contents

• start with pIn as optional any
• try parsing and formatting it various ways
• return a list of all the types it could be

this gives us a degree of type x-checking, especially when debugging b/c log will log anything, and we don't know for some types what is really inside, when we get an error returned, but the output looks like what we expect.
