Rendering failure of Powerpoint 2010 pptx and ppt files #859

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
This problem occours on our server and your demo server as well.

Powerpoint presentations, which have "curvy" background templates, most
probably vector based, are not rendered properly.

In one presentation you can see obscure parts of a Windows Vista desktop
showing through.

The problem is openoffice struggling to convert the 2010 pptx document.
Microsoft doesn't make it easy (you tend to get better results with 2003 ppt
and bets results with PDF). See

   http://code.google.com/p/bigbluebutton/wiki/FAQ#I_uploaded_a_document_but_some_fonts_are_missing_after_conversio

Can you try saving the document to PDF first? See

   http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word-help/save-as-pdf-HA010354239.aspx

and try it again.

How about using an alternative pptx to swf converter?
Do you know any? How could one build it into bbb?

Did a quick check and there are some discussions here:

  http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1842487/ppt-pptx-converter-to-html-or-other-format

But we've not tried anything yet beyond openoffice.

Libre Office may be better about handling this as there has been much
improvement over OO in converting files. OO is mostly dead.

Testing this is on my ToDo list after I pound through some PSTN conferencing
issues with FreeSwitch.

Tested this with Libre Office 4.0 and the results were better, but not quite
there yet.

See attached images for page 1 (better) and page 2 (not quite there).

Let's re-test again on 0.9.0 to see if we can get better conversion with the
latest version of LibreOffice.

Just testing with 0.9.0-dev which is using LibreOffice 4.2.3. Attached are the
images

LibreOffice 4.2.3 is doing a much better job on the second page. While not
perfect, it's serviceable for a presentation.

Marking as fixed. We believe that LibreOffice will get even better with future
versions.
