Ctivo 3.1.2 keeps failing encoding when trying to download from a Tivo bolt.

I have downloaded CTivo 3.1.2, onto my macbook pro. I have had about a 20% success rate, when downloading Movies form Hallmark HD. I have tried both the TS mode, and Non-TS mode. The download allways passes, but the encoding fails a bunch. Not sure what is going on. I have included a log file.

So, I see a couple of things going on here.

I take it you figured out the first couple of failures, where it wanted more disk space.

Secondly, you're surprisingly hitting the MovieDB rate limit, which is a bug that I'll have to look into. That doesn't affect the downloads though.

Otherwise, I agree this is puzzling. The header info looks ok, but then it immediately fails on the encoding.

I only see the TS versions here, but you said you tried PS as well. Can you show that log? (In general if PS works, it's more reliable.)

Is this only happening on Hallmark? If so, there's a small possibility you may have a weak signal on that channel, which would lead to digital problems. Are there any visual problems with the movies while watching on your TV (momentary glitches or dropouts)?

Could you try with Format "HB Default" instead? (go to Preferences>Formats, select HB Default from pulldown, and turn off "Hide in User interface"). And also with Format "Faster"?

At least while debugging, you can turn down the Retries to 1. multiple downloads isn't going to fix this.

I have in the past, a year ago, got similar errors from my local pbs channel off air and from cable. Typically this caused video/audio skew, not a failure to encode. Also, the subtitles are totally mangled (or l8kely the subtitle decoder can’t handle what ever standard pbs is using.)

After researching issues with ffmpeg and looking at the error handling code I decided that there are serious problems with it. Switching to HB solved all my issues, except for some subtitles.

Attachments available until Jun 4, 2018 So I have tried both TS on and TS off. Same Affect. Then I changed to HB default, and I get green Video, with Audio. So the audio is decoding, but not video.

Unfortunately, I don't have too many other suggestions. The logs look fine (which matches what you say about HB "successfully" decoding them, but then the resulting video being bad.)

Did you check the signal strength on Hallmark? What happens with Decrypted Show? This does a download/decrypt only, skipping the re-encoding process. Unfortunately, the resulting files are usually incompatible with iTunes and QuickTIme Player, but VLC can usually play them.

I have nothing but failures, both in downloading and decoding using my new TiVo Bolt Vox. This is after very successful use of cTivo with my TiVo Series 3. I can see all the shows on teh device, with proper info, etc., and downloading of transfers is checked, etc. The "download" button feels dead. Only once did I get to a "queue" button. But the "failure" and "stopping retries"messages came up almost immediately. I have not tried every channel or their content, but so far, nothing works. The Bolt VOX is otherwise a dynamite machine, with excellent video and audio. Not sure what is different about the Bolts, but it must be something. Thanks.

Wow, I'm sorry that you are having that experience. Is it possible to make changes to the processing pipeline until encoding succeeds? Or do you have to start over and download the movie again to apply a change in the processing?

Hi:

I do not know if it is relevant, but I thought I would mention that the TiVo Bolt Vox ccan detect Audio Description (secondary audio) tracks if present. (The AD track sound is sent to the audio equipment by pressing the “C” key on the Bolt’s remote).

I doubt this is an issue since II have not been able to record any episode of ANY non-protected recorded programs on the TiVo Bolt Vox. In addition, I get failures on all programs using 3.0.1 or 3.1.1 versions of TiVo as well. These worked just fine with my Series 3 TiVo.

So, I am trying to think of things the Bolt does that are different. It seems content to chat with cTivo just fine, and the downloading background color appears for a second or so in the lower panel. But after that brief flicker of activity, cTivo sends a “filed” notification. It thus seems that the TiVo Bolt Vox is the new variable. It has a much faster processor and hard rive, among other things, but otherwise plays nicely with my network and cTivo.

Let me know if you would like me to do further testing. I had sort of given up on downloading, so my apologies for being tardy to follow up with logs.

Avast will definitely block it. Was it turned on since your older machine?

Avast replaces the SSL certificate with their own in HTTPS traffic. As TiVo's SSL is self-generated, that's undoubtedly the problem. To disable the HTTPS scanning feature:

Open the Avast user interface → select Settings. Select Active protection → click Customize next to Web Shield. Select Main settings → check/uncheck Enable HTTPS scanning to turn this feature on/off.

That should fix it; alternatively, whitelist your TiVo at http://dvr-08f1.local. (Note the period at the end)

Disabling Avast per your instructions had no positive effect. Also, Avast was operating with the earlier TiVo and the earlier cTivo apps and did not affect downloading of content.

Hi Hugh: Atached is another log. I raised the detail level from Major and killed the retries. I was careful to disable AVAST, though I left the whitelist of the Tivo server. I was careful to try downloading both shows from stations known to broadcast Secondary Audio and those that do not. Again, unfortunately, immediate failure in all cases. Please see today's log below. Well, yes the log worked, but I'm seeing the exact same error message, which is the error one would get from antivirus blocking the SSL. Can you triple-check that Avast isn't running, or that the whitelist is properly enabled for dvr-08f1.local.?

Can you try the opposite as well; ie. turn on Avast and remove from whitelist to see if the block appears in the Avast logs? Then disable again, and check that it doesn't appear.

Do you still have the earlier TiVo? is it still working?

AVAST was app was not running when yesterday’s log was created, though the tivo server whitelisting presumably remains in the app’s settings. I also restarted the machine to eliminate any unterminated processes, just in case.

My old Series 3 Tivo died in May after a power outage. I use Chronosync to archive all user library contents so if previous versions of cTivo were writing logs I should be able to retrieve them from my Drobo. I will look for them tonight. I have a very vague recollection that when I updated to 3.1.2 that I started having download failures and downgraded to the previous version—a strategy that did not work when I got the new Tivo Bolt Vox (paid for by the APC UPS insurance since the Series 3 had been protected from slumps and spikes by the UPS. As noted earlier, AVAST has been on the machine for a couple of years so if the old logs survive, this may help resolve its involvement in the download issue.

My own thinking is that there is some conflict being generated by one of the Bolt Vox’s many new features, such as its ability to record and play secondary audio. I have experimented a bit with cTivo’s download file formatting without luck, but wonder if cTivo is stumbling over some aspect of the audio file container contents.

I will get back to you with more logs.

I don’t think it has to do with the secondary audio, as the failure occurs within a tenth of a second, and the error reports that it has downloaded 0K. So the contents of the stream can’t really affect the processing. Also, I’ve had nobody else report any problem with the Bolt Vox.

To confirm, we could have you download from my TiVo to see if you get the same message. Similarly, if you’re comfortable editing your router settings and giving me access, I could log into your TiVo and see if I can download from my Mac. I could DM you my email to do this privately.

Thank you for offering to do that. Before that, I thought I would install cTivo on my wife’s MBAir to eliminate any other issues that are specific to my machine setup. Is there any MacOS vintage limitations? I believe she is pretty up to date on Sierra or High Sierra, but thought I would check in case she is not up to date.

Also, just FYI, I checked with Tivo tech support and they have issues with “newer machine” and the Tivo Desktop App.

My wife installed cTivo 3.1.2 on her Sierra MBAir, with no AVAST in the picture. Initially got a “waiting” message and no progress so followed the notification advice to reset Tivo. After reset of Tivo, brief waiting message then successful download and decode. After getting her off the Tivo, I once again quit AVAST and attempted download, with same non-result. So, I used AppDelete to completely remove AVAST (but saved an archive). Tested cTivo again, and downloads were successful. Re-installed AVAST and re-enabled Web Shield with dvr-08f1.local. whitelisted. Download attempts failed. Disabled Web Shield altogether, and downloads succeeded.

So…some combination of a full delete/re-install of AVAST and a reset of Tivo seems to have worked.

Hello Hugh, So according to the signal strength meater I am getting a Digital singal Strength of 91, with a peak of 92. So it is getting a signal sock. I would say that is about as good as it can get.

Agreed, although you should compare to a channel that's working well. (I get 99 or 100 on pretty much every channel)

So, if you want to download and post somewhere a Decrypted TiVo version of the file, I could try to see what's damaged in it.
