to start, could add hyphen + space to span preserve characters (pre) checks in the cleanup macro.

With #164 can tag with span preserve characters (pre) so it's no longer urgent, but we should find a way to avoid doing this in the first place. Look into the weird Word version of regex, which is also implemented via the PatternMatch function in the SharedMacros module.
