The main website http://vswebessentials.com/features/markdown suggests that the Markdown features are standard in web essentials. It wasn't until after 15 minutes of searching that I discovered this hidden remark in the patch notes from a previous version "Removed Markdown features, Replaced by Markdown Editor".
Would've been nice if the beforementioned page also said that :(
