Suggestion - "Bell" #3

Thank you for a very well thought-out sound theme!

The sounds fit well with your philosophy, with the exception of one: the "bell" sound is quite jarring, and doesn't seem to fit the stated intention of "not getting in the way" while giving an "African feeling".

This sound is used as the Terminal "bell" in Ubuntu. The context is that the terminal prompt has "hit a wall", and can not go further. For example, if you are pressing the back-space or delete keys, and have come up against the beginning of the line. Or you are attempting to do a line completion, but there are multiple options for you to chose from, and the terminal shell can not complete your input for you. (For example, try cd-ing to the home folder, type ls -l D and hit the Tab key to complete "Desktop", "Documents", or "Downloads").

In my mind, this situation requires a "softer" sound, like lightly hitting the soft bark of a tree with a bamboo shoot or tuning fork. It's as if the tree is "blocking your motion" and the tuning-fork reverberates with a quick muted vibration because of it.

I vaguely remember Ubuntu Warty (2004 or '05 ?) had a single quick African drum beat for this sound, and it was very appropriate.

The current bell sound sounds more like the "your order is ready" bell at a diner, and seems out out of place with the general philosophy of your very nice theme. Please understand that I mean no criticism, so I do apologize if my words sounded that way. I know it takes a lot of work to put together and record just the right sounds.

This is just my humble suggestion. I would like if if you could come up with a different sound for the "bell," but it is your choice. I will still continue to use your excellent sound theme, and I am certain many, many others will as well. Thanks once again.

Hi @PJSingh5000

I'm so sorry for the slow reply!!!

Thank you for posting your feedback. I do understand what you mean :) I think of the current sound works fine, but perhaps it can be improved. I like the "... lightly hitting the soft bark of a tree..." idea.

Would you be able to create such a sound?

Please understand that I mean no criticism

Non taken 😄

By the way, a better (and more active) place to post this feedback would be the yaru repo 😉

@madsrh,

Honestly, I do not have the talent to compose sounds (which is one of the reasons I'm always fascinated by the creativity of folks like yourself who have this gift).

I'll check out the yaru repo as you suggested.
