Hey Guys,

There is an opportunity to get Nokia involved. I can't manage this process, but if someone else would like to take it on in the name of Maine Hacker Club, go for it. As always, don't feel obligated, do feel encouraged to choose your own adventure.

Greetings event organizers,

Not long ago I sent out an offer for Nokia local sponsorship of Hack for Change events. The email was a bit broad so I am going into more details. Hopefully many of you will find this helpful. If you’re not interested please disregard.

Our program

The Nokia Developer Ambassador program is a small continental US (and Canada) outreach effort, essentially grassroots with corporate backing. We don’t have the full might of the company available but we do have small budgets and access to resources such as devices and developer tools for project work, prizes and rewards. We are always excited about hackathons, as they are a great means of getting the word out on Nokia offerings.

One of our main goals is to get developers into our awesome incentive program at http://dvlup.com. Keep that in mind for giveaways and rewards (more on that below).

Engagement

I can’t promise funding from any Ambassador, nor can I guarantee that I or any of my colleagues can even get involved with your particular event. I can almost guarantee we want to though. ;)

Note that for the most part our involvement may be limited by geography. There are several of us, and each has a particular region to cover. However, we also work virtually with many developers and groups across the continental US as well. After reading the list below, contact our team lead, Rich Dunbar, if you have any questions about coverage. Hopefully other Ambassadors (CCed) will provide additional details on their coverage.

Sponsorship

We have a large number of Lumia 800s to offer as prizes and incentives, and a smaller number of more current devices. The latter may or may not improve closer to the event. Each Ambassador has some discretion in establishing award criteria, but we tend to require the following:

· Support for Windows Phone · Support for Nokia devices/features/services specifically · Registration at http://dvlup.com · Either a student or established professional with a software development track record

See your Ambassador for particulars.

We can also provide account tokens for the Nokia Premium Developer Program for Lumia, for incentive or prizes. For details, see https://www.developer.nokia.com/Developer_Programs/Lumia_developer_program.xhtml

General Resources

Make sure to use http://meetup.com to identify not only potential participants, but also partners. Starting of course with .NET and Windows Phone groups, but since this event is wide open be sure to include iOS, Android, web, Linux, database and other developers (as well of course as designers and miscellaneous stakeholder groups). They can be a helpful connection to sponsors and perhaps even help you organize.

In addition, as I noted in a previous email, http://mstechaffiliate.com can provide up to $250 per event for registered developer community leaders organizing events that include Windows 8 and/or Windows Phone. If you don’t feel qualified, check with your local Microsoft developer community leader(s); you can often find them on Meetup.

Nokia Developer Ambassadors

Here is our current list:

Silicon Valley: Paras Wadehra San Diego: George Salcedo Dallas: Randall Arnold (also supporting developers in Nashville TN, Belleville IL, Amarillo TX and Denver CO) Austin: Greg Stoll Boston: Lance McCarthy New York: Chevon Christie Seattle/Vancouver: Jan Hannemann Toronto: Atley Hunter Rich Dunbar, coordinator

Check with individual Ambassadors for their full coverage. All are copied on this email.

Nokia Developer Champions

We also have another program of volunteers who may be able to help you. Here is the list (drill down for US Champions): https://www.developer.nokia.com/Community/Champions/Meet_the_champions.xhtml

If you have trouble reaching a Champion, let me know and I’ll help.

My specific involvement

In addition to sponsoring, I am also organizing the Dallas-Fort Worth area event (http://live-ndch.gotpantheon.com/data-libre-dfw-hackathon-2013) so my involvement in other areas, even my own, may be limited. At the very least I can probably provide a Lumia 800 to every organizer in my coverage areas as a prize. When I have a single prize, I usually offer it as a random giveaway to participants meeting certain criteria. That includes:

· Coding for Windows Phone at the event and presenting the project · Support for Nokia devices/features/services specifically (not a hard-and-fast requirement; can include http://here.com services) · Registration at http://dvlup.com · Present to win · Provide Full name, DVLUP account name, City/State and email to organizer (and then to me)

I’ll typically use double carnival tickets and do a random drawing at the end of the event. This works well for getting high engagement vs amount of work and prizes. If you do this, use whatever means works for you. Make sure participants know of all requirements in advance, even before event begins.

Again, these are my methods and my colleagues will have their own.

Going forward

Please keep us in mind for future events and meetups. We are committed to Nokia’s success and welcome any opportunity to make things happen!

Best regards,

Randall (Randy) Arnold Developer Ambassador
