@marcoow I will ask the designer in my team. Since she's not an GitHub user can she write you an email if she's interested?
Great - thanks @stravid! Of course she can write me an email or you just upload proposals here for her so the community can discuss.
:+1:
@stravid: any updates on this?
@marcoow We are currently a little bit busy. Do you have a concrete briefing for the logo? Without that she can't do anything :-) (She is not familiar with Ember.js or any concepts of this project.)
I was hoping someone would come up with a cool idea ;) I think it definitely should include something related to authentication like a key or sth. or maybe a locked door or whatever.
One note: I think it's not allowed to use the Tomster (e.g. we could not use the Tomster holding a key etc.)
Just throwing this out there...maybe a logo around an iris scanner?
:+1:
It also needs a donation page. This project is so awesome, you always fix all the bugs I've encountered within hours/days... it deserves one :D.
@bakura10: the best form of donation is if you tell people to hire @simplabs for their projects ;)
@stravid: any progress on the logo? Don't want to rush, I appreciate that you're willing to help - just excited to see some progress.
I hope we can get a Tomster for this, fingers crossed.
I think using the Tomster is only ok if the official Ember designer is hired. @wifelette would be able to answer that I think.
Hey folks— We do sometimes grant licenses to use the Tomster, or work with people on specific commissions, but thus far we've only done it for official core/project efforts + user groups + non-profit community efforts. Granting a license to use our mascot is a sort of implicit approval, so at least for right now, we're not doing it for third-party tools or code projects that aren't core.
Sad face! Best bet for the Ember "feel" might be to make a logo/item/mascot/whatever that was the same style as the Tomster, but sans Tomster himself. Happy to help brainstorm if useful, and also to work with you if you're interested in using the official Ember design/illustration team :)
@wifelette: that's an understandable standpoint I'd say. If you'd like to help brainstorming you're welcome though of course ;)
@wifelette: Can we get that process going with hiring the official designer for this? @simplabs would pay for that. Would be great if she (or someone else here of course) could also come up with a nice idea for a logo as we didn't really have many yet...
Checking on availability, there are two people who work via Tilde on Ember-related stuff. More to come...
Some ideas:
Thanks für the suggestions @givanse but we cannot use the Tomster - see @wifelette's comment above.
Sans the Tomster, there are still some good thematic ideas there :) Key rings, security, radio, cryptex, flag, etc. I'll pass these on to the designer assuming availability.
Right! I forgot about that. Lets replace Tomster with pet-of-your-choice ;)
@marcoow if one was interested in helping with this, would this thread be the place to share ideas and sketches? :sun_with_face:
Based on the themes and discussions above, I was thinking a simple safe dial with a pleasant typeface would be neat. I also like the key ideas!
Just a little exploration of what it would look like as a key w/ the name next to it. Uses Oswald for the type. It is not really polished, but a little something. I would appreciate any thoughts or feedback!
It would be good if it would remind Ember a bit much. Maybe you could make the three circles in the key look like a hamster box (sorry, I don't know how to say it in English):
Thank for the ideas guys! Would be great to see more sketches here. @brettchalupa: I think having a key or some other symbol alongside the name would be just fine.
@marcoow: ESA has been a big help to me on my first-ever Ember project, so I came up with a few designs (also my first-ever logos for anything outside of my company), so let me know what you think!
Thanks @jdhines! I personally like your 2nd proposal best so far. Not sure whether we can use the ember logo in the official typo though (maybe @wifelette could answer that?)
Different fingerprint. @marcoow what do you think of the use of "ESA" as shorthand?
I definitely liked the first one better to be honest - much simpler...
I prefer the 2nd proposal by far too
okay, if that one is preferred, I'll see if I can't tweak it a bit better, maybe try a few alternates to the Pacifico typeface, which is pretty close if not exactly what the real ember logo uses.
@jdhines: cool, maybe we can even use the official type face - let's see what @wifelette says.
I really like the second sketch!
Second one seems good, team thought it was cute :) Use of the typeface like that should be fine, just important to include in the README and anywhere else relevant that it's not an official part of Ember and is maintained by folks other than the core team. Seem reasonable?
Sounds great @wifelette.
@jdhines: do you have some variations maybe (maybe also a combination of the 1st and 2nd - with the Ember typeface but the outline from the 1st proposal). Having these in some vector based format would be great. @simplabs is going to setup a new website then with the logo and a matching design.
@marcoow: here's a few more variations. I did like the outline, but using the Ember typeface throws off the spacing due to the ascender on the B, and it just didn't look right in that typeface with a capital E. Let me know what you think of these, or if another variation seems better. Once we land on a design, I can send you vector file with color variations.
First variation, but with a white background. :100: In the others, SIMPLE-AUTH needs some space.
I like the round fingerprint as that's also better usable as a standalone logo. Maybe a combination of the 2nd and 4rd proposal would be cool (round fingerprint with the outline)? Also I think @givanse is right - "SIMPLE-AUTH" needs some more space around it.
Thanks for your great work @jdhines !
@marcoow not sure if you meant 3rd or 4th above ("4rd"). Did you like the key on the fingerprint, or is that too much?
Guten Tag!
Sorry, not sure what I meant there ;) I'd vote for number 4 of the latest ones, I think the key is a little too much.
What do other people think?
And you prefer the outline just around the thumbprint, not the whole thing as in number 2?
Yeah, I think I like it better as it is in 4).
We finally have a logo:
Thanks @jdhines !
:+1:
Would be great if the project had a logo. Maybe one of the more artistically advanced contributors could contribute something.
