When using black as background color the mouse cursor is almost invisible #274

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 8 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. set background color to black and foreground color to white
2. (try to) select text with mouse cursor

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

the mouse cursor should be white when selecting a dark background color.
instead it is black and I can't hardly see where the mouse is...

What versions of mintty, Cygwin/MSYS, and Windows are you using?

cygwin 1.7.9
mintty 0.9.9
Windows 7 32 bit

Mintty uses the system's text selection cursor, which can be chosen on the
Pointers tab of the Mouse control panel. The default cursor changes colour
depending on the background, i.e. it's black on a white background and white on
a black background.

Are you using a custom mouse cursor? Or a custom theme, which often includes
custom mouse cursors? Do you see the same issue in other applications, e.g. in
a web browser showing a dark background?

Rejecting due to lack of further information.

I am experiencing the same issue. My cursor is the default one (Windows Aero
Theme, in Windows 7), and it changes automatically color in other applications,
but mintty (launched by "C:\cygwin\bin\mintty.exe -i /Cygwin-Terminal.ico -" )

cygwin setup is 2.761
mintty is 1.0.2

No such problem here on Windows 7. Can you attach your ~/.minttyrc? A
screenshot might be helpful too.

Are you certain it's the default pointer scheme, i.e. the so-called "Windows
Aero (system scheme)". This can be checked on the Pointers page of the Mouse
control panel.

Is there something like Remote Desktop or VNC involved? Any relevant third
party utilities? Is the graphics driver up-to-date?

Black of course is mintty's default background colour, so I think there'd be
lots of complaints if this was a general problem. That's why I'm fishing for
something system-specific.

I can but assume that the issue has gone away somehow. I sure don't know what
mintty could be doing wrong here, as it doesn't do anything but tell Windows to
use the text selection cursor.

My .minttyrc (note though that the effect is exactly the same _without_
.minttyrc at all!)

BoldAsFont=yes
Columns=120
Rows=43
FontHeight=10
FontSmoothing=partial
BackgroundColour=0,0,0

Thanks for reporting the .minttyrc, but this needs more information to work out
why this happens on some systems. See questions in comments 1 and 4.

Same problem on freshly installed WinXP

As I said before, I haven't been able to reproduce this on any of my machines,
and there'd be many more complaints if this was a general issue. So once again,
much more information is needed to work out why this happens on some machines.

To try to help with that, here's a more comprehensive list of questions:

1. What version of Windows are you using?
2. If using Vista or newer, have you got desktop compositing (aka Aero) enabled?
3. Are you running Windows in a virtual machine?
4. Are you using remote desktop, VNC, or anything like that?
5. Are you running any mouse or window management utilities that may play a
role here?
6. What's your graphics card? What driver are you using for it?
7. Are you using something other than the default theme and/or mouse pointer?
8. Are you using a non-default text size (i.e dpi setting)?
9. Is the mouse pointer black or outright invisible, i.e. can it be seen
infront of white text?
10. Does enabling or disabling transparency (on the 'Looks' tab of the options)
make a difference?
11. Does the problem occur in web browsers, e.g. when mousing over non-link
text on http://blackle.com?
12. Does the problem occur in other programs, e.g. over text with a black
background in Wordpad?

@alexander Thanks for those answers. Your replies to 11 and 12 indicate that
this is not a mintty-specific issue. Please report it to the VirtualBox
community.

As a workaround, you might want to choose a different text selection cursor on
the Pointers tab of the Mouse control panel, or configure mintty to use a
bright background.

Interestingly this seems to be a known bug in VirtualBox for about 5 years
(http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/750) and is caused by the mouse integration
feature.

Thanks very much for reporting back with that link. The comments on that bug
specifically mention PuTTY being affected, and the workaround of choosing a
different text selection cursor in the Mouse control panel is also described
there.

I found the problem that most folks are probably experiencing:

The DEFAULT Windows cursor OVER TEXT is the vertical line; of course, a
vertical line will be VERY hard to read over a black background, as it is
designed for the normal white backgrounds of Notepad and Write.

Simple solution - change the TEXT CURSOR from the vertical line to your choice
of graphic pointer.

Thank you LVLamm... as you say, the default windows aero mouse pointer scheme
will cause this. I suggest changing to the Windows Black pointer schemes as
the pointers all have a white border around the black parts making them visible
over a black background.
