Guideline on geospatial data #7

I am not sure if this repo is still relevant, so instead of creating a pull request, I made an issue. Where should this text go? Do we need to overhaul this repo?

As discussed for 18-JIE-6090.R1, we should amend the author guidelines on the use of GIS data / figures. We agreed on the following text:

If you are using geo-spatial (GIS) data in illustrations, please provide at least one of the following two dataset types (or both if convenient):

  1. GIS data using an open file formats (preferably geoJSON or topoJSON) or a shapefile (including the .shp, .shx, and .dbf files).
  2. Export the underlying data to a spreadsheet (csv or xls file) including all necessary data attributes. Please include also a spatial reference, which should at least be a descriptive name for each datapoint (e.g. “Lower Manhattan”, “France”, etc.).

After the misunderstanding with the author, I propose to rephrase a bit (see text in bold font):

If you are using geo-spatial (GIS) data in illustrations, please provide at least one of the following two dataset types (or both if convenient):

  1. GIS data using an open file formats (preferably geoJSON or topoJSON) or a shapefile (including the .shp, .shx, and .dbf files). The data must include geospatial information (polygons etc.) as well as the data attributes that are plotted.
  2. Export the underlying data to a spreadsheet (csv or xls file) including all necessary data attributes. Please include also a spatial reference, which should at least be a descriptive name for each datapoint (e.g. “Lower Manhattan”, “France”, etc.).
