Discourse Forum? #94

Closed jamiereid closed 10 years ago

Opening this issue to gather interest/thoughts on adding a Discourse installation to the website.

It's been spoken about in IRC before, but I figured it's worth formalising in some way, and this seemed like the best way.

For those that don't know what Discourse is, rather than try to explain it and possibly influence your views I'll just link to the website: http://www.discourse.org/

As long as we configure it so that the people who prefer a mailing list can keep seeing it as a mailing list, I think this is a great idea. I believe it is possible to do that.

Source on github too: https://github.com/discourse/discourse

The mailing list type things may not be up to where we need them yet :( Haven't found much beyond the "reply to topic" ability similar to the way github issues work.

I'd love to see Discourse used by MHV, as long as the backend to the mailing list. I think having it as a separate thing to the mailing list might be a bit fracturing to where conversations are held, if that makes sense.

I wouldn't mind replacing the mailing list with it, but I understand some people prefer the mailing list format.

This looks relevant: https://github.com/discourse/discourse/blob/master/docs/MAILING-LIST-SETUP.md

That looks pretty awesome. I agree with the others, it would be awesome aslong as the mailing list still exists.

Mailing lists are very handy even for people like me who love forums. If i wanna reply to something to throw in my 5cents whilst roaming, all I need is my phone. Where is for most forums, they're not overly that mobile phone friendly.

Dat’s pretty awesome; Discourse has come a long way since we [puts ag-aus.org hat on] looked at it last. +1 on Discourse and +1 on being able to interact via email with it.

Although not as cool as discourse, found: https://nodebb.org/

Made a start http://forum.makehackvoid.com:8080 (ok to play with, might be wiped and restarted though). Looking at how to get the mail part working so it can act as a mailing list. Also need to configure for the different types of logins to work (API keys etc).

Our discourse forum has been live for a while and linked into the main website in commit c491e63.
