Title: MemDai Direct Giving Campaign

Links to Github issue/forum post/ or discussion thread: Dai can be used to develop resilience in local communities during the Covid pandemic.

Proposal abstract: Cities in the US are being impacted by the second-order effects of Covid resulting in food insecurity. MakerDAO can make a positive impact in these cities by sponsoring the development of Community Currencies for these cities. This proposal describes a framework in which to develop and sustain a Community Currency for the city of Memphis. (alternative: This proposal describes a framework in which to develop and sustain “barter accounts” between charities and businesses in Memphis)

  1. Approach charities that are willing to engage in direct giving and introduce them to the unique benefits provided by wrapped-dai Community Currencies
  2. Approach businesses that can supply the resources needed by the beneficiaries of direct giving
  3. Charities use the burner wallet interface to generate MemDai and distribute MemDai through direct giving
  4. Beneficiaries spend MemDai at participating businesses
  5. Participating businesses are whitelisted to unwrap MemDai and convert it to USD

Benefits of this framework

  1. Charities have visibility on where the funds are being spent
  2. Beneficiaries receive additional purchasing power
  3. Businesses receive additional revenue and avoid payment processing fees
  4. Charities can receive direct donations through dai
  5. The ecosystem can be tax-sheltered as a charitable operation
  6. This framework can be copied and applied in other cities around the world

Unknowns

  1. The participant recruitment pitch will need to be developed and recorded
  2. Can the burner wallet system scale well enough?
  3. How do merchants record and report charitable purchases?
  4. Onboard participants or structure tax-exempt status first?
