The real ST, if started without a floppy in the drive, stays a couple of minutes on a white screen trying to read the non-existing floppy. Also, I'm not sure how usable the disk tos is, even in the real world (roughly nobody had it). I tend to use st_fr (because it's what I had), but if you want to use the US st try mame st -bios 1.
Also, to avoid the waiting time, create a 819200 file full of zeroes and give that to -flop. That should boot fast while staying neutral.
