I've no idea what was merged before in https://github.com/mamedev/mame/commit/5cfb1cc07607259f4c6ef3a4c4012f24ecb85dcd when https://github.com/mamedev/mame/pull/12396 got closed, but it was in no way representitive of the PR I had open, and fixed absolutely nothing.
since that got closed, this is the actual PR, again.
