What do you want?
To compile and run on linux

Why do you want it?
Because it allows orchestration engines running on linux to automatically batch 
compile and upload onto arduinos.

How do you suggest it's added?
I think it will worked without any changes. Has anyone tried.
There maybe small changes required but this can be accomodated with runtime 
sniffing or compilation checking.
I actually prefer runtime sniffing as its more portable.

Will it cause any incompatibility problems with previous versions?

I don't think I'll be able to do this since there's a lot of hacks in the code 
to solve windows specific problems
