The author argues that content (music, ebook, TV) is no longer strategic lever to lock in users. Even with Amazon, the lever has been switching to Prime and Alexa.
Content and access to content was a strategic lever for technology...Music and books don’t matter much to tech anymore, and TV probably won’t matter much either.
Tech needed content to make their devices viable, but having got the content (by any means necessary), and with it of course completely resetting the dynamics of the industry, tech outgrew music and books and moved on to bigger opportunities

these are all southern California questions, not northern California questions

I was confused by this sentence in the article so I asked my US friend and here's his explanation.

Southern California is still known for the TV and Movie industry. This is where Hollywood is, where the Academy Awards are, where many movie studios reside. The Content in the southern part of the state is very different than the Northern part of the state where Google, Netflix, Apple reside. The author also groups Amazon in the Northern California group probably because of it’s many subsidiaries
