List of games that don't work 100% (using an iPod Touch) #203

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 8 years ago

I am currently using Frotz 1.6 (the latest at the time of writing) using an
iPod Touch iOS 5 (or whatever Apple's calling it. Also, don't ask me about the
gen. It was bought in January 2013 and let's leave it at that).

This is to be a list of every game that doesn't, at present, really work
smashingly on Frotz, as well as the reason why, as far as I could tell. I will
add to it as I play the games. This list will include known problems, such as
the .z6 games, because it's as well to have all these things in a big list and
watch it dwindle to nothingness. :)

Let's begin.

007 - Alto Secreto: Crashes, simply put.
222 Contra el Cangrejo: after some seconds of working nicely, some weirdness
ensues. The line that indicates where my text will go jumps up and down, I stop
seeing what I'm writing, and before long, crash.

Incidently, there may be some issues with some Spanish games, probably the same
issues that there are in Git (nevertheless they work fine on Glulx).

Balances (Glulx version): the problem is mostly due to the size of the screen,
and the size of the hyperlinks. If we could pinch/zoom them, as per another
suggestion, it would be perfect.

Glkchess: the display is quite off. Images are chopped in the middle. Without
pinching, it's also not really playable. With pinching, however...

zRogue: I know, I know, it's an abuse, you don't *have* to run it. But it
starts to display surprisingly well. Then something goes FUBAR and it
completely stops responding. At which point there's nothing to do but to
totally remove the game with DiskAid; because Frotz will save it as is, in its
unresponsive state. ;)

Z-Chess: completely unplayable without arrow keys. I understand this is very
specific, so a suggestion would be to define, in Frotz's settings whether not
the arrow keys were currently emulated, and let the user define which keys
would do, for the duration of the session. It's a bit of a hoop, yes, but very
few games require this (which I know is an argument against it being
implemented at all, naturally).

I will keep you posted as I play (might be a while since I'm currently playing
a puzzle fest!). Feel free to add to this.

Funeral for a Friend - this sort and strange one uses sounds, not supported by
iFrotz. But they're not critical for finishing the game.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone - this first chapter of what seems to
be an ongoing multi-part WiP uses sounds, not currently supported. Otherwise
playable as far as I know.

I've fixed the known issues with hyperlinks in text buffer glk windows for the
upcoming release. The issue doesn't have its own top-level issue report.

Both Groove Billygoat and Invisible Parties support 'X' instead of ESC to exit
menus.

GlkeBook: Doesn't work, because it asks to import a file. Mind, this isn't
anything resembling a game, so the loss isn't that big. But it does expose the
problem with accessing external files.

Aladino e le Perle di Saggezze: plays sound which iFrotz doesn't play yet.
Fully playable and crash-free as of iFrotz 1.7.

Casa Tomada - this game's graphics are cropped instead of resized. Not a big
deal, since the game is more of an introduction, but still.

UPDATE re 1.7: You'd think pinch/zoom would correct this, but surprisingly, I
can only pinch the cropped image. I never get the complete one

Heroés de la Mazmorra - this one has sound that, as we know, currently isn't
played in iFrotz. Also, word completion doesn't actually happen, which is odd,
but it must be the game doing something fancy internally.

Homo Homini Orcus (Glulx version) - has sound that isn't played in iFrotz
(yet!).

I sometimes have a hard time finding the non-Englsih games you reference when
they are hosted by a site other than IFDB and the site itself is not in
English. It would be helpful in these cases if you would provide a game link
with the description of the problem. Thanks.

I think I have fixes for several of the crashes on launch in Spanish games
(such as Sarimek and La Conferencia)

The drawing problems in MHTO (Glass Boxes) and related games are in the games
themselves.
They are querying the screen size, splitting it to make a graphics window, then
centering the center of the picture in the center of the graphics window, but
drawing it without scaling so the outer edges are clipped. Not sure what could
be done about it. I'm sure you'll suggest adding an option to scale all images
and making it a configurable option, but I''m really loathe to add fiddly
options in the interface just to work around bugs in certain games.

Have you considered investing in an iPad mini? :-)

I have, but the pocket-size format of the iPod wins me every time. I can grip
it like it's harder for someone to steal it from me in the tube, and it just
goes in and out of my shirt breast pocket whenever I want it to. ;)

Fixes for the crashes - awesome!

Drawing problems - meh, as long as you know what's going on and can document
that it's known that games like so-and-so, that fail to consider smaller
devices, are known not to display properly on the iPod. I think with that you'd
have done your bit.

One of the games in the last list, I think it's Sarimek, actually says in the
readme it allows for a configurable graphics panel - the user can make it
smaller. Not all games are this considerate, shame...
