Topic : A day in Uzanbazar ghat
Location : Uzanbazar, Guwahati, Assam
Out of the many river banks that provide stunning views of the Brahmaputra, Uzanbazar is closest to my heart. Lined with quaint cafes, restaurants and chai stalls, this place is perfect for a lazy stroll. Mornings and nighttimes can be spent hanging out in any of these spots.
However, evenings must be solely reserved for watching the setting sun over the Brahmaputra, while the sky displays majestic shades of reds and purples.
Although, I have marked the supposed start and end point of this journey, these are merely guides and one may choose to freely stroll along the paths that I have highlighted.

Explorations :
As per the feedback provided, the triangular map geometry was ditched for a rectangular layout. This made sense for multiple reasons -
The issue here was to figure out ways to accommodate the diagonal lines that cut through different roads.
The final layout that I decided upon was a rectangular one.
The icons are kept inside a bounding circle, which is connected to a small line ending in a dot. The dot shows the exact location of the entity that the icon represents. The traditional location icon (triangular with a curved top) is not used as icon I am using currently provides a lot of flexibility when arranging multiple elements in tight spaces.
The dull grey color is not overwhelming and does not take away attention from other important elements.
A few iterations were tried out to show the highlighted routes, out of which - the third one was picked because of its simplicity.
When I sat down to create this iteration, I realized that the most important areas on the map were too cramped to fit in all places of interest. Thus, only the places that I personally enjoy - made it to the final map.
Also the smaller diagonal line was broken into two sections to make more room for the important sections of the map - in the final iteration.
The challenge was fitting in all the different important elements within small spaces, in a way that the map didn't look cramped, and there was no ambiguity as to which icon signified which element.
The morning, evening and nighttime routes were highlighted.
Roads that weren't important were marked with crosses.
Universally identifiable locations - such as banks were also marked.
This is the final map that I created :

Who - People who come to visit Pune in Ganesh Chaturthi and the students who come from different places for studies in colleges.
Why- This map will help the students to plan their route so that they can save time for searching. There are many pandals in just small area and people miss out on the important pandals because of visiting all pandals.
The locations of some of the must visit Ganpati pandals in Pune will be shown on this map. For brief-Ganesh Chaturthi is a ten-day celebration marking the birth of the god Ganesh. The Ganesh statue is placed in a structure called a pandal; it also serves as a public celebration spot.
1) Mental Map
I am really bad at reading maps and directions. So, I focused as if I am travelling in those streets and tried to memories it. The mental map drawing showed me how abstractly I record maps.
I did a very abstract version of the map first. And redid it again. This time I was memorizing, calculating shapes angles and thinking.
2) Traced Map Traced only the important roads that are needed along with some extra. Used open street map.
3) Abstracting
Forcing metaphors, which are not that important but tried it before going further. Simplified the lines.
Made the angles 45 degree and zoomed in by distorting the left side.
Final Abstract version
4) Color Scheme (Initial) I thought of using blue and orange color scheme.
Reworking after feedback Added more details such as: metro track, road names angle, and division of areas.
4) Color Scheme I tried a lot of color schemes to show the area divisions. I used chroma.js to make these schemes. Choosing colors was hard as green and blue represented greenery and water in a map. Only option was violet or pink.
But nothing helped in understanding the divisions of peth.
So, I finally removed them completely and only kept the outline to divide.
5) Poster After a lot of editing I reached till here.
I added a texture of paper to give it an olden look also it added a yellowish tint which distinguished the road from bg.

Pune is a city full of educational institutions, with about 6 colleges in Viman Nagar itself. With a huge student population, most being students who've come from different parts of the country, I decided to create a schematic map that would guide students on having exciting college lives... on a budget. :) (A guide that I would've loved to have had earlier on.)
The schematic map includes a personally curated list of food joints, cafes, street vendors, bars, clubs, stationery shops, Kirana stores, cheap theatres, and wine shops that students could walk to, during their stay at Viman Nagar.
Scale: Local area, Viman Nagar

RV College of Architecture, Bangalore, is situated at the outer edge of the city, in an area called Banashankari. Since it is quite far from the main city, the students often find themselves isolated from the happenings and hubbub of city life. This map is a guide for all the students and aspirants that come and go - of the iconic (and budget-friendly) locations around the institution.
Scale: Street view of Banashankari 6th stage, zoomed in (+zoomed out version to locate the college from nearest metro lines and expressways)

Name: Abhinav Bansal Place: Delhi (South Delhi Zone)
The aim is to map the prominent Fruit Vendors (Local + Supermarkets) on the route of the busiest office places for the residents of South Delhi.
Tracing the Major linking Roads from the prominent office places to the residential zones and adding the locations of Local Fruit Vendors (Red) and Supermarkets like Reliance Fresh, Modern Bazaar, Big Bazaar (Blue). The colored lines are the respective Metro Lines- the most popular public transport of Delhi.
After highlighting the Major roads, A hexagonal shape appeared. Although it required some tweaking, a symbology was also established. The planning of Modern Delhi is based on a Hexagonal Grid.
Some rotation was done (Approx 25 degrees towards NW) to obtain the hexagon pointing towards South. Since the map is based on South Delhi, a dominant South Axis was now established. An isometric grid was added to this hexagon, and the edges were extended to add context. The extensions are the most common office places in NCR, outside of Delhi. (namely Dwarka, Aerocity, Gurgaon, Noida and Faridabad)

Kolkata is a melting pot of cuisines, from the Mughal to British influence, to the prominent presence of Chinese settlers in the city. Though new restaurants, pubs and bars are coming up every now and then, the glamour of the heritage restaurants of Kolkata has not died down. In fact, they are the most sought-after restaurants to date. They have stood the test of time and have become a part of the city's iconic dishes and legacy. This schematic map is a personal curation of the top vintage restaurants of Kolkata for newcomers who want to experience the city's food.

Pratapgarh is my hometown where I have lived most of my life. It is a small town but has most of the basic amenities for people living here. Some of my family members along with other relatives live in a village which is on the outskirts of the city. I have seen them and other villagers running towards hospitals in Pratapgarh city in case of health issues and emergencies.
Since my father is a medical representative and owns a Polyclinic in Pratapgarh, he knows about almost all the doctors and clinic staff in the city. People from my village always ask my father or me how to reach a particular hospital before departing. It's sometimes tough to explain and give landmarks to them as they also don't know about them. So this map is intended to make their search easier and they could find the health facility quickly.
(in original North-South Orientation)
I rotated the original map approx 90 degrees clockwise. This was done so that people can orient themself along with the straight major road in the middle.
Sketching on paper
I chose the local known language of the city which is Hindi in Devnagari Script for labeling the locations.

Finding the best chai in Ahmedabad Indubhusan Roy, 216330002
Ahmedabad is a city in which it is said "Humare khoon me chai hai" or chai runs in our blood. Unlike other cities in India where there is a culture of bars or nightlife which gives people avenues to socialize, Ahmedabad is a dry state. So chai is something on which people meet over or like they say it "chai pe charcha". Ahmedabad is flooded with numerous chai shops and some of these pop up at their own specific timings. Living in Ahmedabad over 6 years and cris crossing the city on two wheelers here is a curated map for chai lovers to find the best quality chai around the city.
Sketching the mental model. Ahmedabad or New Ahmedabad which is where most people migrate to has this unique set of linking roads which connect to the ring roads or the spinal roads. The old city has grown organically grown and because of the heavy traffic there it is not a very popular destination for chai, but of course for other delicacies. Here I have tried to create my mental idea of the city which are the 5 bridges across the Sabarmati river and reach the SG highway and connect the city in a parallel manner.

Ahmedabad has a hot dry climate and boasts of a magnificent past with various monuments and 'darwazas' and 'jaalis' spread across. The color palette for the is inspired from these nuances of the city. Walking across the city, going for a heritage tour, these are some splashes of color that the city will paint in a traveler's memory. The city cuts across the five arterial roads as mentioned earlier. It is very easy to navigate across if one follows a straight path across any of these roads. So the map has been kept simple with just a few landmarks. The chai spots have been marked with a chai cup and as one approaches these locations surely they will see a crowd around these tea stalls with the best chai awaiting them.

The map although represented the look and feel of contours in hilly terrain needed to be simplified further. So I simplified it more, narrowed down the radius and played with the orientation.
By doing this, the significant components were highlighted only. But the biggest challenge that I faced was to get the essence of temples in hilly terrain. So, as per the advice of Prof. Venkatesh, I tried adapting the 2.5D representation on the map. I felt this fulfilled the purpose of capturing the hilly terrain and highlighting the important temples, landmarks and roads.
But it was looking crowded, and the focus on temples was being taken away, so I tried to change the colour scheme, taking inspiration from Indian temples. Here is the final output.

Bangalore is considered to be walk-friendly city in India, owing to its climate and green cover. The government of Karnataka has pledged to dedicate 1000 km of walking lanes all across the city. Having resided in the city of Bangalore for almost a decade in six neighbourhoods, I have particularly enjoyed the slow walks I took in these neighbourhoods. During these walks, I also wondered about the perception of people residing in these places about their own surroundings. Do they know the quiet corners? Do they know all the shortcuts? Do they appreciate the beautiful houses and the bird songs as I do in my walks? This exercise is an attempt to create a map for the residents of Sanjaynagar (the place where I lived) and Sadashivanagar (the place where I worked) and curate an experience for them to appreciate little things that made me smile at one point. This could also be used by other people who like to go out for walks in quaint neighbourhoods and other citizens who might want to know the city better. :-)
After tracing on OSM, the major and minor roads and geographical features such as Sankey Tank are abstracted geometrically and many organic streets are laid out in an organised grid. This is important for identifying the neighbourhoods and its limits and establish a connection between them. Arterial roads are marked in red, sub-arterial in orange and rest of the roads in blue. Parks and playground boundaries are filled in green and water body in blue.
Further abstraction is carried out and neighbourhoods are further defined. The 3 neighbourhoods are defined by the arterial and sub-arterial roads running along them. The large institutional lands of IISc, CPRI and Air Force Training Command around the 3 neighbourhoods are shrunk for the neighbourhoods to come closer and become one larger boundary. A dash of colour is used to set the canvas for more detailed markers and explorations.
Colour palette is decided and applied. Detailed markers including houses, cafes, restaurants, bars, tree-lined avenues and neighbourhoods with greater green cover are included in the map. Traffic nodes are also marked and main roads are given names. Hierarchy of roads is established by line type, colour and thickness. Legend is included, the story of the map is written and credits given. The map is ready now.
Or may be not. After the design is completed, it is realised that the scale of icons don't suit the map so much. Further rescaling of icons is done and additional icons and texts are added to finally complete the map design.

A few clubs and locations are scattered all over Mumbai that very often host live gigs of musical artists of various genres. A majority of them are in Central and Southern Mumbai. Generally, after attending concerts at these places, you feel hungry and want to get some food close by before going home. So I mapped these locations as well as eateries nearby, for the avid concert goer who is new to Mumbai.

Bokaro Steel City - What people call a peaceful city, undisturbed by strife or hustle, in all honesty, are mere euphemisms for quite an unamusing and dull place, which might serve as a USP for the elderly generation. But for a young (or young-hearted) person, perpetually seeking a bit of adventure and thrill, they might find this city to be a bit disappointing. This map is precisely for those people, mainly showing secret and unexplored paths and areas which one might go to fulfil their adrenalin needs (with a bit of risk involved).

Hi everyone,
As discussed in the class, let’s pick our hometowns/city we are familiar with, and create schematic maps. You can find the slides from our class here.
The audience can be tourists (general, or specific type of attractions like pilgrimage, lakes etc.), or a specific use case (such as cycling, educational institutes etc.).
You can see some of the previous schematic map exercises for reference.
You can follow the following steps for your schematic map:
Here are some references to go through:
