Closed rasagy closed 1 year ago

rasagy commented 1 year ago

Hi everyone,

As discussed, let’s make some schematic maps of our hometowns! You can find the slides from our class here.

You can see some of the previous schematic map exercises for reference.

You can follow the following steps for your schematic map:

  1. Scale, Audience & Purpose
  2. Mental model sketch
  3. Tracing relevant aspects from OSM
  4. Abstraction: Grids & geometric shapes
  5. Simplification vs Minimal
  6. Elements of the city
  7. Visual hierarchy
  8. Details: Icons, Typography, Legend, Context

Here are some references to go through:

Feedback:

  1. Create district areas where Vasco ends and the various regions inside Vasco.
  2. Move the name of the roads to the outside of the road.
  3. Try using dotted lines for the walking path. Could you make it different from the railway line? Please change the color of the railway line and align it to the railway station and make it run parallel to the road for that small part.
  4. Make the labels and icons of similar colour, very subtle but substantial differences.
  5. Naval Area can be a region/district.
  6. Name various other roads.
  7. Add more points of interest to the map.
  8. Try adding texture/ pattern to other map areas similar to the water.

Summer Bound in Thrissur Round by Parvathy

About Thrissur

Formerly known as Trichur (Historical name Trishivaperur) is the third-largest urban agglomeration in Kerala after Kochi and Kozhikode. The city is built around a 65-acre hillock called Thekkinkadu Maidanam which seats the most prestigious Shiva Temple of the South called Vadakunathan Temple. The whole city was planned and constructed around this round garden. Swaraj Round is the local name for a circular round which is about 2km long in the centre of the city of Thrissur, surrounding the Thekkinkadu Maidanam. Swaraj round is the biggest roundabout in South Asia and the second largest in the world. 17 roads connect to it. Thrissur is also known as the Cultural Capital of Kerala because of its cultural, spiritual and religious leanings throughout history. The city hosts the Thrissur Pooram festival, the most colourful and spectacular temple festival in Kerala. The festival is held at the Thekkinkadu Maidan. Thrissur rose to importance after Maharaja Sakthan Thampuran ascended the throne of the Kingdom of Cochin (1769–1805) and made Thrissur his capital. The Maharaja made the city into a major financial and commercial hub of South India.

Untitled-1

Town Planning

Sakthan Thampuran planned the city of Thrissur according to the principles enshrined in Arthasasthra of Kautilya. The four major roads that radiate from the centrally located ring road (Swaraj Round) around Thekkinkadu Maidanam and originating from the four sides of Vadakkumnathan temple divide the city into four quarters. The city was planned giving importance to all sectors of society and definite zoning was adopted for different activities. The eastern region constitutes the major residential areas. Sakthan Thampuran brought 51 Christian families to Thrissur and made them settle down in the southeastern sector. This earmarked the beginning of trade and commerce activities in the town. Brahmins were made to settle in the north-western sector which paved way for the indigenous textile production in Thrissur. All these initiatives eventually transformed Thrissur into a hub of trade and commerce activities dominated by gold, textile and financial sectors.

Audience and Purpose

The main aim of this Schematic Mapping is to inform tourists about what they could visit and do around the Thrissur Round during Summer break. A guide or a manual of all the activities and hubs I would explore when I came down to visit during my Summer Vacations in School time. It varies from diverse spots from restaurants to temples to historical museums and palaces. Since Thrissur is a historical city with the advent of the new age urban developments there is a beautiful marriage of old and new spots to explore around the Thrissur City Round. The area of mapping is exclusively around the Swaraj Round and the roads leading to it

Mental Model Mapping

The first step of Mapping was to recreate the area from Memory and roughly plot the Point of Interest on them Version One

IMG_0390

The next step was to list all the Points of Interest on a Google sheet and organize it categorically

Screenshot 2023-02-02 at 9 33 19 PM

The next version of the Mental Model Map included a much more concise and only contained relevant POIs Version Two

IMG_0421

Open Street Map

The next step is to compare the mental model map to the actual area map on Open Street Map and see how similar each are

Screenshot 2023-02-01 at 7 34 24 PM

Tracing the Relevant

From the OSM we trace the major nodes, roads and paths that plot the POI's for geographic accuracy

Screenshot_2023-02-01_at_7 34 24_PM

Abstraction to Shapes

With the outline in place, the abstraction of the map to the shapes observed was done keeping the accuracy of the map. It was also realised the area had to be zoomed in closer to the roundabout and the circular garden.

Metaphor Mapping

AHMEDNAGAR FOOD EXPEDITION

1. Scale, Audience & Purpose:

WHY: Ahmednagar has historically been a place for a cocktail of cultures. Predominantly Maharashtrian, Jain, Marwari and Muslim cuisines have shaped the city's food culture. People in Ahmednagar are extremely cordial and always have guests visiting them since it's a city surrounding nearby villages. Since it doesn't have many entertainment spaces; food becomes people's way of socialising and entertainment.

Food is a near "legacy" of the city and family-run food joints for decades have become a huge part of the city's Identity. Hence, a Map of where to eat would be a great add-on for the current citizens to document the culture across the city.

WHERE: I am panning the entire city as it's not very vast and the spots are fairly scattered.

WHO: The map is for students who move to the city for higher studies; for current residents to never run out of what to eat where options and for anyone who has come especially to enjoy the food culture of the city.

  1. Map needs a distinct boundary. Extending the highway all the way up might do that.
  2. Colour Hierarchy.
  3. Grey roads can be thinner. (alternative routes)
  4. Colour coordinate labels with road colours.
  5. Add more neighbourhoods.
  6. Capital Case is a NO.
  7. The points of interest need to stand out more.

parks, pubs & water - salt lake , bidhanagar, kolkata

where-salt lake is like a mini city in itself, people who live in salt lake do not need to go out of their area for most of the things , the place is very well planned in a grid fashion with a garden/ park in each block, salt lake visually & aesthetically is very different & cleaner than rest of the kolkata who - students & working professionals who recently moved to salt lake why - The grid planning is confusing at first but people get used to it in a month or so, navigating & finding places initially take much exploration on the users part, this map will help them locate pubs & parks, it also provides information about additional water bodies and water park around

Not so shady - shady places in Bangalore

Karthikeya GS

Shady (Adjective)

Informal Meaning: Usually related to a place which is dubious and untrustworthy but in my context, they are places which are usually less visited by people and stimulate a feeling of adventurous thrill while visiting them. These locations are in their natural, untouched form (most of them) which makes them a perfect getaway from the busy city life of Bangalore.

Purpose : Uzanbazar is situated right beside the river Brahmaputra, which makes it a perfect spot to view the sunset, and spend their evenings either in food joints or just by the nature. This map can be a guide to evening walks with most beautiful experiences mapped out such as sunset points, parks etc alongwith with examples of cheap eateries or relaxing cafes etc. It can also give a view on locating various spiritual/peaceful places by the river.

Scale : About 2 k.ms
