The project is an attempt to map parts of Bhubaneswar, the capital city of Odisha. The mapped area is known as 'Old Town' or 'Ekamra Kshetra', its ancient name. 'Ekamra' is referred to mango trees and 'Kshetra' refers to an area. Also, in Ekamra Purana, a 13th-century Sanskrit treatise, it is noted that the presiding state deity of Lingaraj was originally under a mango tree. Hence, the name Ekamra Kshetra.
The area is famous for its ancient sandstone temples and heritage ponds built. The monuments are built over 2,000 years ago from the 3rd century BC to the 15th century AD. The purpose of the map is to provide tourists and visitors a route plan to cover almost all the heritage sites in one go. It is also an attempt to make people familiar with the city's history and its origin.
More and more attempts of visualization was done as most of the shapes and patterns were unsatisfiable to incorporate into the new design of the map. Finally, upon taking a larger area into consideration, a usable figure was obtained. After playing with the orientation and sizing of the figure, a familiar mango tree structure was derived. Which then served as the outline of the map.
The Map of Ekamra Kshetra consist of all ancient Hindu temples one should visit if they happen to be in the temple city of Bhubaneswar. The area mapped is a special foreign tourist attraction as it has been listed as a tentative site in UNESCO World Heritage list.

Where? Hampi: I have visited Hampi a few times, and this place holds a special spot in my heart. The terrain of Hampi is uniquely beautiful. The large rocks balanced in impossible ways on sharp edges and points never cease to amaze me.
Who? Hampi is known for its rich historical and architectural significance, featuring the ruins of the ancient city of Vijayanagara. The site attracts a diverse range of visitors, including History Enthusiasts, Backpackers and Travelers, Spiritual Seekers, Photographers, Cultural and Heritage Tourists, and International Tourists.
Why? There are estimated to be around 500-600 structures, including temples, shrines, and other monuments in Hampi. It is impossible to cover everything in the limited time of two days. People who visit the hill for the first time, or are less frequent visitors that move around in a limited area.

Visualizing map of Tirumala temple town on the hills of Tirupati. Idea is to create zoning and marking accommodation areas. Since people are already familiar with the temples it is not the main focus.
" The Lord of the Seven Hills " A Tourist Route map of Tirumala town.
Location: Tirumala, Andhra Pradesh, India.
The places and areas show are the most common places which a tourist come across during his journey in Tirumala. The map majorly focuses on Guest House, Rest Houses and Pilgrim Complexes. It also covers Major Temples, Food Places, Shopping and other tourist attractions. The major signifier in remembering the map is the abstract face of Hanuman formed by the Outer ring road of the town. Then the map is radially expanding from his head starting with temples in the center and accommodation places, shopping, food and health surrounding it. The idea contour effect is to give the feeling of altitude and the location on the hills. The hand drawn icons with specific roof pattern for a particular type of place will help in easy navigation. This map aids the tourist in easily orienting himself during his IN & OUT journey.

Where- South Bangalore (Between Kanakapura Rd and Bannerghatta Rd)
Why- Malls are one of the most popular places to spend leisure time among with friends. Activities like watching a movie, snacking, window shopping or actually shopping at branded stores makes a mall a great place for spending hours in the same place. South Bangalore is slightly less explored by those living in the "main" region of Bangalore, hence this map.
Who- The map is created with students and Bangalore residents in mind who wish to explore some new malls and areas. It is not the best option for those coming to Bangalore for the first time as most of these malls probably won't make it to the top-5 malls by area in Bangalore.

Sarthak Rao, 19u130012 (WIP) 'Cycling routes in Mumbai Suburbs' - includes central side suburban Mumbai, and parts of Navi Mumbai and Thane. The map is intended for cycling enthusiasts living in said areas, to find appropriate roads for distance, altitude, and scenery.
^ Mapping from memory, of places I've cycled to from Mulund.
^ Tracing of the roads and landmarks
A bit of a stretch, but the triangular outline resembled the basic frame of a bike. However, with wheels and other parts missing, it didn't feel like a strong enough metaphor to warrant re-orienting and scaling the map.
^ Current WIP of schematic map, drawn to a grid. Attempted a basic hierarchy of typography for marked names.
Yet to do: encode relevant data of altitude, iconography for type of road/destination (if it is a scenic spot, or good urban road, or mountain/offroad). Other miscellaneous improvements - highlight that it's a small part of Mumbai, continuity of roads, etc.

This feels like two islands, whereas the West & South edges don’t end, they extend. Let’s make it clearer. Show nearby land on North & East side.
Are there other color palettes that might be more relevant to Goa/Panjim than a black background?
Do road have names? If yes, add them.
@Anshika1105:
Abstraction works.
Add some context for the edges (what is around Khargar). Explore if there are zones, and add some more hierarchy to the roads (highways vs smaller roads).
Apart from PoIs, add any popular landmarks that might be relevant for orienting or way finding.
@lakshrajpal1803
Tweaking the background a bit to focus on the selected area would help.
We only see PoI Labels. Add Road names — explore different type styles for them.
For PoI Labels, you can increase the halo slightly. Explore if label colors can match the icon color.
Make roads extend beyond the focus area of the map & add where they take you.
@avanibhagdi
Find a grid that can work for such dense roads, my hunch is something that has 30/60/90 degrees could work.
Don’t overfit the roads into the heart metaphor — you can let the heart be a subtle change in background like the Vijaywada map we saw.
@Yash2412kothari
Good work on abstraction, and fading away of roads on the edges. You can add labels for these roads to highlight where they lead to.
Vary the background slightly for highlighting the area, and add some context of forest/farms beyond/around Hampi.
To accommodate the small labels, explore if you can zoom in further and give more area to the map and reduce size of other details.
Are there any variations in land use? If yes, include that.
@RaghavSamodia1
Nice metaphor!
Background to highlight the focus area, and then make the roads fade away or extend beyond.
Vary the case in labels a bit more to add more contrast. You can also vary letter spacing for the park & Pink City.
Explore icons (maybe from Maki icons) for PoI, and vary colors to be more relevant.
@abhishekshirsagar
Good work on abstraction!
Gray Hornbill could work very subtly — just turn the roads gray for the main path, and add a small icon above/around the title.
Add some more details of places within and regions outside the forest.
@SamarthDhanuka
Flatten/increase the radius of your arcs so they feel closer to the original roads.
Add more region labels for context on where this is.
Add more landmarks/references like metro.
Vary the color a bit more — blue feels closer to river/canals.
@ANOOF-PK
Love the video game aesthetic!
The PoI could be numbered from Left to Right.
Add Road names
Area names if any
Sea name (Arabian Sea)
@Dhairya0802
Good progress
Take 45 degree grid and follow it closely
One way roads with slightly different color + arrows
Add label for region, road, shopping areas/bazaar, nodes.
Roads — let them extend outside of the region.
Bridges could look slightly different
@SarthakRao
Good work on abstracting this on a grid.
Overall typography hierarchy works. I would increase the stroke/border on text so Airoli/Vashi etc are easier to read.
Give your map some background color — maybe the area of focus can have a slight shade of gray/light yellow so it all doesn’t feel empty.
Altitude might be hard to show on a map — feel free to skip it if it gets complex.
There is no similar treatment to letter spacing in devnagari that works — splitting shiro rekha is a no no according to me. See if you can vary the typeface or the weight/size instead?
I like the idea of highlighting steep parts of the road. This will only work if it is used in a few specific parts (making all roads have a gradient will not be as effective).
@AnjaneshIndranil
tourist places
on Google Maps?@AmrutaBailke
It’ll be good to continue abstracting only the traced map (not your mental map).
@Ketaki007
Wonderful work!
I love the attention to detail on the labels, and the constrained color palette.
I’m not sure if things like Pune Metro Line 2, Arai Hill or Mutha River need to have a separate legend entry — just directly labeling them on the map is enough.
You can use a slightly different treatment of the metro line (dashed/dotted line/thinner line) to make it look different from roads.
For the dark maps, you’ll have to vary the colors for everything: Metro labels should be lighter, the border around the stations should be darker (instead of white). Other details like dark halo are spot-on.
Great to see the first bi-lingual map from this class! Please do add the other details about the map in marathi when you get the time.

Schematic Map of my Hometown Bhopal - Metro Map for the City of Lakes
Bhopal - the capital city of Madhya Pradesh has more than 7 major lakes that are a prominent feature of the overall landscape and gives an identity to the city. The arrangement of these lakes also forms an essential datum to the navigability of the city, especially for its residents.
Background: Metro lines in Bhopal are currently in the initial stages of construction (1st Phase with 2 lines - red and purple) and are expected to be completed by 2026) Bhopal is also a major railway junction in central India and has 5 key railway stations of the Indian Railways Network.
Purpose of the Map: There doesn’t exist a schematic metro network map of Bhopal Metro yet. I attempted to create one with the prominent features of the city.
Visual Style : the visual style of the map is heavily borrowed from the metro network maps available at INAT mapping (link) so that it could fit in along with the other cities available.

Avani Bhagdikar/ 21u130032 Updates here
Hi everyone, good to see some more updates. I’ll do one final review tomorrow.
Sharing some common things to keep in mind — you can use this as a checklist for your final submission:
Schematic map of X is a good start. But it’s even better to find a relevant, catchy or engaging title. See if your map’s area + theme/purpose can form a good title. Make sure it is prominently visible.
Add a short description about the map (purpose, anything specific that people shouldn’t miss…). Mention your name + affiliation (you can also mention the course etc. for more context). Add attribution for anything you used to make the map (OSM/Google Maps, icon sets, type faces etc.) _especially if you make a multilingual map!_
Make sure your elements aren’t floating in space — give the area of focus a slight variation in background from the rest of the background. You can slightly lighten/darken the map background compared to the overall poster’s background.
Make roads, railway lines & metro lines extend beyond the above area of focus. Add some context — where do these lead to?
Make sure your labels vary based on what they represent. If they are connected to an icon/area, use the same hue to form a clear association. Add a halo to make it easier to read.
Give a reference for which way is North, by using a Compass rose or North arrow
Hope this helps. Look forward to the final maps, especially the bilingual ones!
