PS: Thanks for the reminders today, Rasagy! However, I have realised that some of the changes would take more time than I can manage today, so I will be incorporating the same by tomorrow. The documentation is just a WIP for you to see, I am working on making it 10x better! Thank you!

Ps: I'm still in the process of refining the project based on the feedback received during the exhibition.
Damão, or the old town of Daman, was accidentally discovered by Portuguese Captain-Major Diogo de Melo in 1523. From there on, Daman went on to became a Portuguese settlement for more than 400 years before getting incorporated into India in 1961. Today these forts house beautiful ruins of the Portuguese history along with administrative offices of the union territory. Every corner of the old town speaks of the heritage through it’s architecture and colorful walls.
This schematic map will help tourists go around the two forts of Daman and experience Portuguese heritage around the town. The schematic map can also help tourists orient themselves towards what all they can cover in a day. A map that guides them to experience Daman like they are in Goa (the little Portugal of India) but on a budget!
Mental Model of Daman The mental model clearly highlights the boundaries created by the waterbodies and how the water edge plays an important role to give the town an identity of it's owm
Daman on Google maps Daman sits at the mouth of river Daman Ganga meeting the Arabian sea. The mental model turns out to be pretty similar to the actual map of Daman from Google maps.
1st tracing of map The first tracing was done over OpenStreet map just to get an idea of what all elements can be schematisised from the geographical map and what entities can be included.
Legend Green - Heritage site Blue - Beaches Purple - Activity areas
2nd tracing of map The first trace was at very zoomed out level, not giving enough space to highlight locations and attraction point. The second trace was attempted at a more zoomed in level to highlight boundaries of the fort. Roads were also highlighted on the basis of their heirarchy.
1st abstraction of map After the level of zoom was finalised, the traced map was traced again but on a 45 degree axonometric grid to abstract the lines and shapes of the geographical map.
The first cut abstract version was approved to be in the right direction. The next step was to simplify that versionand bring it more close to the mental model of the road networks.
After simplifying the layout elements of the cities like road names, nodes, location, attraction points, natural features and commercial areas are identified on Google maps.
All the elements are transferred on the schematic map along with detailing out on the visual aesthetic of the map.
Color Palette inspiration The colour palette was inspired from the walls of building along the Rua Martim Afonso street inside Moti Daman Fort.
Visual elements Since the map had a playful approach to the tourist map, the colours and font selected were round and bold to give a fun look to the map. Iconography for locations and attraction points were taken from Maki icon set, to establish a clear contrast from the pop colours of the base map.
The names of the location have a white stroke with a 80% opacity to increase legibility of the text.
P.S - The regional language version of this map shall be in Gujarati and is in work in progress.

Hi everyone, it was great seeing all of your maps in person during the exhibition.
Sharing some common things to keep in mind — you can use this as a checklist for your final submission:
Schematic map of X is a good start. But it’s even better to find a relevant, catchy or engaging title. See if your map’s area + theme/purpose can form a good title. Make sure it is prominently visible.
Add a short description about the map (purpose, anything specific that people shouldn’t miss…). Mention your name + affiliation (you can also mention the course etc. for more context). Add attribution for anything you used to make the map (OSM/Google Maps, icon sets, type faces etc.) _especially if you make a multilingual map!_
Make sure your elements aren’t floating in space — give the area of focus a slight variation in background from the rest of the background. You can slightly lighten/darken the map background compared to the overall poster’s background.
Make roads, railway lines & metro lines extend beyond the above area of focus. Add some context — where do these lead to?
Make sure your labels vary based on what they represent. If they are connected to an icon/area, use the same hue to form a clear association. Add a halo to make it easier to read.
Give a reference for which way is North, by using a Compass rose or North arrow
Hope this helps. Look forward to the final maps, especially the bilingual ones!
Evaluations completed. Thanks for the updates!
Hi everyone,
As discussed, let’s make some schematic maps of our hometowns! You can find the slides from our class here & a video of my Outlier talk on this.
You can see some of the previous schematic map exercises for reference.
You can follow the following steps for your schematic map:
