Schematic Hometown Mapping #86

Open rasagy opened 2 months ago

rasagy commented 2 months ago

Hi everyone,

As discussed, let’s make some schematic maps of our hometowns! You can find the slides from our class here & a video of my Outlier talk on this.

You can see some of the previous schematic map exercises for reference.

You can follow the following steps for your schematic map:

  1. Scale, Audience & Purpose
  2. Mental model sketch
  3. Tracing relevant aspects from OSM
  4. Abstraction: Grids & geometric shapes
  5. Simplification vs Minimal
  6. Elements of the city
  7. Visual hierarchy
  8. Details: Icons, Typography, Legend, Context

Here are some references to go through:

Step 1] Scale, Audience & Purpose

Medical Care Facility in and around Nagar Road (From Yerwada to Viman Nagar)

Where is the map of? (Scale) My hometown is Pune and I stay on eastern side of Pune from last 20+ years so I selected this area. The area has main highway passing through to Ahmednagar, popularly known as NAGAR RAOD. The area of this map is covering Shastri Nagar, Kalyani Nagar, Viman Nagar and part of Yerawada.

Who is it for? (Audience) people who stay in this part city or travel from outside for the purpose of healthcare treatment, or purchasing medicine etc.

Why would they view it? (Purpose) It will help to locate medical shops, hospitals and clinics quickly for treatment purposes.

The map is of my hometown Barrackpore, a town in Kolkata, focusing on playgrounds in and around the area. The idea sprang from the phrase 'Four Grounds on the Foreground", which had a nice rhyme to it, and because there is a heavy sports culture in the area, specifically football. Teams of kids, teens and adults, represent these grounds, often more than one from each, and compete with each other in tournaments, trying to one-up for street cred and bragging rights. Also, in the evening these grounds become hang-out spots for all, people talk, argue, discuss, smoke cigarettes, and make important life decisions sitting on the ground. These grounds are a part of daily life and significant for the community.

Visual Style: Inspired by the GTA San Andreas Map.

First tracing the map over OSM screenshots and then adding nodes to the traces. It was an idea to keep the nodes in the final design so that their count can be used as markers and people can position themselves using them. A4 - 1

Grid exploration. Whilst abstracting I did not want to change the map a lot, as these areas are very local, people usually walk or are on their bicycles going around, so the bends on the routes function as markers. After trying a bit, figured that I would need a grid that offers quite a bit of freedom, and after experimenting I settled on the hexagonal star-like grid. A4 - 2

The following are screenshots of abstraction on the hexagonal grid and the addition of street node markers. It was quickly evident that keeping the 'road nodes' as markers, was not a good idea as it made the map look cluttered. Moving forward I choose to remove them and only work with the main routes. A4 - 3

Icon explorations and final icons. Inspired by GTA San Andreas map I tried to use a 16x16, but it was becoming a lot of work for the time at hand, so I tried to use an 8x8 grid. It was way too abstract but still managed to make something. Some of the icons that are part of the map are not in an 8x8 grid. A4 - 4

The final map design has lots of encodings of colour, icons, shapes etc, and no legend, it was a design decision. A decision taken as a challenge, to make things as intuitive as possible for an able-bodied individual, using just colours and iconography, without relying on a legend. A disclaimer that the map may allow mistakes and misinterpretations.

....... Uppates_Post feedback_17Sept24: Removed some of the angles, removed dotted lines from highways, spaced out the horizontal strokes of the railway line, removed italics from the title, changed text style for Flyover label

What A map / guide to Delhi's Modernist Architecture / Buildings.

Why Among all the Mughal ( Pre - colonial ) and British ( Colonial ) buildings in Delhi, the building from Modernist era (Independence to 2000s) are laregely ignored and undocumented. The map will offer a guide to such buildings for the enthusiastic folks.

Who Architects, Students and Tourists

Additional information that i'd like to include in the map -

For this, I identified about 45 buildings all around Delhi. These buildings are also poorly documented, making it further difficult to visit them even if one wanted to.

Attached below is a MENTAL MAP that i made. With the spots that i could mark down from my memory. It shows three major areas of Lutyens Delhi - Connaught Place, Rashtrapati Bhawan and India Gate.

Mental map

With this i started tracing the map of delhi with all the buildings marked on it. ( Marked on Google maps. OSM data used for tracing. )

Where is the map of? A schematic map of Chinnakada Market, Kollam, Kerala, specifically designed to show the layout of one-way and two-way roads.

Who is it for? For people who goes to chinnakada market once in a while or Tourists

Why would they view it? The roads in Chinnakada market are confusing because many of them are one-way, but there are no signs to show this. Drivers often make mistakes, causing traffic jams. The problem gets worse because of pedestrians and parked vehicles crowding the narrow streets. WhatsApp Image 2024-09-16 at 20 52 13_fd80cb9d

A Birdwatcher's Guide to Dehradun- A map of all the best birdwatching locations in and around the city

This map is for both people who are new to the hobby and what to explore their city and for experienced birdwatchers new to the city. I plan to show the roads, the kind of environment(forests, mountains, rivers) and the kinds of birds you could expect to see there.

Step-1 Mental model sketch: IMG_0765

Step-2 Tracing from GMaps: IMG_0764

Since some of the spots are very far apart, the scale of the map is quite large. This means that the map may not be very useful for directions, but good to get an idea of the variety of spots, choose a few and plan an excursion accordingly.

Step-3 Abstraction Grid options

I decided to move ahead with the third abstraction i.e. the isometric grid because of its accuracy. It being interesting to look at is a plus point.

Output:

Dehradun v2

Features such as vegetation (trees, grasses), mountains and water bodies tell the user the environment of each spot on the map. For the visual style, the natural curves of the the rivers were simplified while preserving their meandering nature.

I decided to add the Clock Tower, which is located at the centre of the city, to help users get their bearings. A compass was also added for the same reason.

Topic: Temples in South Kolkata

What? (Scale)

Every year during my summer break, I eagerly look forward to visiting Kolkata, a city I hold close to my heart. Each visit deepens my connection to this vibrant place, with its lively streets, historic charm, and cultural richness. Over the years, we have explored numerous temples throughout the city, each offering a unique glimpse into Kolkata’s spiritual landscape and architectural heritage. This map provides a schematic view of South Kolkata, the area where I stay, highlighting the various temples in this region. These temples, both well-known and hidden gems, reflect the deep-rooted traditions and spiritual depth that make Kolkata such a fascinating city to explore.

Why? (Purpose)

Kolkata is renowned for its rich cultural heritage and numerous religious landmarks, including iconic sites like Kalighat and the Dakshineswar Kali Temple. While these temples are celebrated widely, South Kolkata is also home to many beautiful, lesser-known temples that often go unnoticed. These hidden gems embody unique architectural styles and hold deep cultural significance, deserving far more recognition for their beauty and historical value. Exploring these temples offers a glimpse into the city's vibrant traditions and spiritual diversity that often escape the spotlight.

Who? (Audience)

This map is designed for visitors eager to immerse themselves in the spiritual and cultural essence of Kolkata, particularly the vibrant area of South Kolkata. It’s perfect for those who have a passion for visiting temples and wish to explore beyond the city’s well-known landmarks. As a guide, this map enables visitors to experience the rich heritage and hidden beauty of Kolkata’s temples, providing a deeper understanding of the city’s culture, traditions, and spiritual diversity. Whether you're a devotee or simply intrigued by Kolkata's architectural and cultural legacy, this map will enhance your journey and reveal the lesser-known treasures of South Kolkata.
